I wonder if anyone can offer me a solution to a problem I encounter when
playing recordings from my Humax DVR and DVDs from my LG DVD recorder. The
problem is that the sound output I get is much lower than what normally
emanates from my LG TV set when I am watching live programmes and the sound
scale is set at 20/100. I find myself obliged to raise the sound level to
40/100 or even higher and even then the sound output is not proportionately
increased. Indeed, if I turn the sound up even more this has little effect.
If I omit to lower the sound control before I switch back to the TV output
then I get sound so loud that it almost blows the room apart! The DVD player
has been connected to the TV set with an HDMI cable and a scart connector.
though not with both at the same time, while the DVR is connected by a scart
connector.

Any help will be much appreciated.

I have adjustable gain amplifiers between Humax and Topfield PVRs and DVD
player to the TV. I can spend hours fiddling to get the levels right - but
never can exactly. Even when setting the two PVRs so they match the same
prog on the TV using a sound level meter, different progs will be wrong.
But the BBC can't match levels between BBC SD and HD so why should I
expect to? ;-)

Before getting entangled in complicationss, have you set the volume
outputs from the DVR and DVD recorder to maximum? This can be done with
the volume rocker button on the Humax remote control and presumably
similarly for the LG.

It gets worse. I have a goodmans box and a DVD player feeding a telly and
stereo. The Goodmans box is in fact louder than the dvd, but not only is the
dvd quieter, but it lacks bass and has a kind of tizzy distortion on it. On
feeding the same sound outputs to the amp directly from the dvd, its
correct. I've tried several of the goodmans boxes and they seem to all have
this problem byut my old netgem does not. Of course switchover, rnib and
goodmans all claim it has to be the dvd. I don't think so, but well its been
worked around so...

I don't know if he has - but I've noticed the same thing. Playback from
the hummy is a lot quieter than live programmes - and I think that
includes live playback using the hummy as a tuner (though I'm not
certain). And the hummy is on max. Presumably with all HDMI this is an
all digital signal path, so matching shouldn't be too hard. WTH?

Could it be something like one decoder applying drc differently to another?
I've noticed that the version I'm using of VLC makes a dog's breakfast of
this for HD.

My thanks to all of you who responded to my posting. I have given
consideration to what has been stated or suggested.

As regards the volume control on the Humax DVR it has been at the maximum
setting. However, that was not the case with the LG DVD recorder/player. I
had not been in the habit of using its remote sound adjustment rocker switch
and had used the volume control on the TV remote to adjust the sound. Now,
after a bit of trial and error, I find that using the volume control on the
DVD remote brings the sound to an acceptable level. The curious thing is
that while the level achieved is the same as that revealed by using the TV
remote the outcome is better than what was achieved previously. I am, of
course, still left with a situation whereby watching a DVD calls for a much
higher point on the scale and puts me in the position of having to ensure
that I use the TV remote to reduce the sound level substantially before I
switched back to live TV.

I hope all that makes sense. I am reminded of a story a man told me many
years ago about how while in Japan studying he had asked a Japanese
colleague to explain some language problem he had encountered. Afterwards,
when he had thanked the Japanese man and indicated that this had clarified
the matter, the Japanese man retorted "Really! Well I must not have
explained it properly"!
