I've heard many friends of mine in the older demographic saying bbc intends
to axe this channel. Is this really true? It surely is one of the cheapest
of all channels as its all older stuff.
The real point of axe falling should be the music channels like r1 x and 6
music. I'd have thought that 1xtra and 1 were now so interchangeable as to
be pointless. If radio 2 put back its specialist music shows in the evening
many of the 6 music stuff would be pointless.
Most of they young uns tend to listen on line, there could be a great
market for a second Asian channel or one that covered other cultures
including east European or more news in other languages.
Come on BBC what are you doing, trying to annoy as many people as
possible?

So is R4X threatened?

The reports I have heard suggests it will go online so not sure how that
save money?

The DAB Radio 4 Extra service seems all automated using recorded
programmes and recorded continuity so will the same as the online
version. There does not appear to be any saving by reducing the number
of services in a DAB multiplex.

HiFi nuts will probably want the bandwidth used for their particular
favourite service but I prefer to have Radio 4 Extra available in the
car and at home on a portable radio.

Are they planning some sort of new service but that does not fit with
saving money.

One horrible thought that they are planning a service for one of
minorities who seem to get more attention than they deserve. I can just
imagine them having a service just for transvestites or homosexuals! Or
perhaps the black community want their own service as with the BBC Asian
Service?

I think R1x is exclusively for black people.

They should end the Asian channel.

As usual.

Yes.

The BBC likes to threaten the closure of things like R4x just to get
sympathy for increasing the licence fee. They threatened to close the
Asian Network at one point but we all know they'll never do that.

Always thought it should be shared amongst many groups of immigrants -
Asian, Caribbean, Chinese, Poles, Ukrainians etc. Each with their own
programmes at regular times.

Not exclusively for one group.

Must be large areas where it has no listeners.

But black or asian have sub divisions, and we have Greek Koreans, Sri
lankans, eastern Europeans which also can be sub divided.
Exactly the point I heard from my older friends. I am not a smart phone
user, nor do I want to only listen at home, so why axe dab?
They always have room for many sports extras etc when it suits them so this
sounds like a complete waste of time just annoying older people for no gain
whatsoever. Wye not stick it on the medium wave, oh, I forgot, that is full
of interference from unsuppressed wall warts, and the like.

Actually when they have discussions on the Asian network they can be quite
informative.

Mind you I'm no more into that music than a lot of the r1 or r1x stuff, but
it really is interchangeable as many people see themselves as British, no
matter what their original culture may have been two generations ago.

Not so sure about that. I guess in the more rural parts of the country, but
in mosttowns to be quite frank if it were not for the work of Asian families
there would be no shops or cafes and small light industry, as the old
British folk have all pissed off or are abroad. Brian
