Hi everybody. I'm new to this group.

I've been contaced by mail by a Mr Gary Woodward from Morley, Leeds.

He's offering a tipster service by telephone. Also offering a biz-opp to
sell the service on his behaslf.
It's very well writtenand seems genuine enough. No ridiculous claims but
guarantees a certain level of profit in 3 weeks or your money back.

What I would ask is if anyone who knows of him, uses his service and is
satisfied would kindly post the info.

A strange request perhaps, but with so many crooks out there I thought it a
reasonable question

Many thanks

Regards

Steve Holman

Does money back include any losses to the bookmakers?

I tried him last summer, £50 to join, and then a % of profits at the end of
the month. First tip won 4/1, I thinks "woohoo".........then a string of
losers as long as your arm, at this - he's claiming on the phone line that
"we ARE the best in the business, bear with us thruogh this sticky patch".
That made me laugh.

I give up phoning after about 3 weeks, with still only the one winner.

In my opinion, bin the letter.

If hes so good then why does he need to send out letter selling his
services? They use the old crap about not being able to get on, but if
this guy is punting horses about 4/1 then he could get a substantial
sum on through various means without the help of you and me.

He's probably just another one of the many scam merchants out there
preying on gullable folk who still believe in trust.

Remeber if something looks to good then it probably is.

When you bin this letter it won't be too long before the next one comes
along probably from Walter Hammond of Newmarket, and then Bob Rothman
or even Castle Racing/Investments. If you got this letter from a
mailshot then the chances are your address is going to be sold on and
on to various scam merchants looking to make a quick buck. If I were
you I would re-seal the letter and return it to sender, I have found
this is the only way to rid them of your address, there not so keen to
keep doling out the 27p postage for returned letters.

It would be a good idea to setup a scamsters web site where we can name
and shame these people, maybe that way we can put these con merchants
out of business and help save some other poor sod from being ripped off.

Well thats enough of my ramblings on the subject. If I get some time at
then end of my current contract (in about 5 weeks) I think I'll setup a
web page to name and shame.

Watch this space.

Funny how so many of these 'chaps' seem to live in the Leeds area. Morley
seems to ring a bell as well.

Beastman,

Maybe we should send you a few Southerners to help you play
footie in DIVISION ONE. You'd better not leave it too long
in putting out some feelers though, our chaps may not want to
play in Division 2 in 2001!

OK.

Anyone who doesn't want to receive direct mail should contact the Mailing
Preference Service on 0345 034599. Your name and address will be added to a
suppression file against which ethical mailers will run their mailing files.
This process will take about three months, but you will not receive anymore
direct mail. If you do, complain straight away to the Advertising Standards
Authority (0171 580 5555) and the Direct Marketing Association 9)171 321
2525). They have the power to withdraw bulk mailing discounts against
companies not pursuing best practise in this area.

Peter

Ps I think this number also covers the Telephone Preference Service, to stop
direct sales telephone calls too.

Hi Folks

Before criticising others, and to encourage more pro. subject
mailing, please, can't your 'older' members, soon to be pests,
stick to subject mailings,in this instance Woodward, or form a
new topic. Certainly not football banter on a Racing NG.

Are we allowed to have banter about horse racing? Or should all
banter be refrained from?

Peter,

thanks for the phone number I'll give that a try, however I suspect
most of these cowboys are not ethical and probably don't subscibe to
such a service.

Hi

You are correct in one! Banter about horse racing, great, NOT
football.
This just illustrates the point of missing the subject.

The only good information is insider information.

By definition, it is only given to insiders.

No offence to Gary Woodward, but you could probably do just as well
following a free tipster in a newspaper.

Otherwise, get a Racing paper, form guides and as much information as
possible and work out your own bets - I suspect its just as cheap as
subscribing to a tipping service.

If, after subscribing to MPS (and allowing about 3 months for the full
suppression file to be updated and sent out to mailing houses) you still
continue to receive unwanted mail, then do complain to ASA and the DMA. They
can take action and, along with the Post Office, can pretty much close a
company down by making them resort to more expensive, less targeted customer
recruitment activities, but only if people complain. One of the reasons why
many Timeshare Holiday operations packed up their bags in the early 90's.

Strictly speaking bantering about banter does not conform to the
Newsgroup Charter. Can we have a ruling on this?

Unless of course there is a horse called Banter, in which case it is
perfectly legitimate banter.

Banter about Pantar might include :-

"Can you direct me to Blackpool beach?"
"So this racing, what's it all about then?"

I think I'll stop bantering now...

I have to say the Telephone Preference Service is a complete joke.

In my day job as a financial adviser, I employ someone to make cold
phone calls for me.

Having enquired about the TPS as being ethical and not wanting to get
fined was informed that it costs over £3000 to instal a system that
would check the phone numbers were not TPS and it took about 2mins to
check each one, at the end of the day this is just impractical for a
one man band business which mine is. It may be OK for big business.

My opinion is that the telephone and mail are essential to do business
and people can just put rubish in the bin or go X-Directory if they are
that anti-marketing.

As relating to rip off tipsters - they are quite frankly not going to
give a shit about the TPS or similar.

I usually swear at telephone salesmen and hang up. One phoned back and said
"Rude Bugger" and hung up.
If a saleslady phones I shout something like " Do you know that you're
stopping me from watching the football, it's Real Madrid vs Eintracht" One
girl asked me the score as she was missing it too"
