Hi all

Just joined this group to see if I can get any help regarding one of
my ancestors.

Mark Lane was born in Buckinghamshire in 1854 but moved North with
two of his brothers seeking work. I believe Mark ended up in the
Doncaster area and set himself up as a Bookmaker. His business
apparently was a success, and at some stage it is said that he was
the sponser of the 'Mark Lane Stakes', probably at Doncaster. After
Mark's death the business continued and became the Mark Lane Group of
bookmakers which eventually merged with Coral in the mid-1970s.

As a little relaxation over the Christmas period can anyone of you
racing buffs confirm (or deny) any of the above, and perhaps be able
to add some more information or point me in the right direction. I
tried contacting Corals, but without much luck. The archives of
Doncaster Racecourse also seem to have become 'lost'.

With best wishes for the festive season

David

Sorry mate don't know - but has anyone heard of the Watley firm who used
(may still do) trade in South Africa. Very distant relations of mine.

Cheers Mark.

About the time that Mark Lane got listed on the Stock Exchange, in the early
1960s I think, ML were very active in the Dagenham area.
I read that every time Ford workers returned to work after a strike, tax
rebates boosted MLs turnover.

Sadly the question was asked almost 17 years ago, so it's unlikely that
David is still looking for an answer.
