I am getting increasingly annoyed at the Sky Sports commentators, mainly
ex-professional golfers, showing their total ignorance of the rules.
When I was watching today they were going on about damage to the hole,
and how a player was not allowed to repair it himself. According to the
rules, if the damage was caused by the impact of a ball then the player
can repair it. Where does this rubbish come from? Is there a special
condition of competition we know nothing about.
I was planning to email them to ask what it was all about, but I can
find no means of doing so.
I can remember emailing Peter Allis on the BBC once to ask a rules
question. I think I queried why Sergio got a free drop from a ball
plugged in the rough when I don't. He replied on air next day, but I
didn't hear it as I was out playing golf.
