We, Lahinch Golf Club, defeated the Northern Ireland team from Roe Park by a
score of 38 points to 34 in the first semi-final. Not a particularly good
winning score - put it down to nerves.
Our opponents in the final, Borris Golf Club, won their semi-final with a
perfect score of 44 points. On hearing that there were some ashen looks from
my team. Our club captain sensed this and simply said "Look lads, that is
the score they got on that set of questions. You have done the same in the
past."
In the final we managed to win through with a score of 43 points to 35. So
we are off to St Andrews for the Grand Final on December 14.
If anyone reading this post has been to the St Andrews finals I would dearly
love to hear what to expect in the way of question difficulty and any advice
for preparation.
Cheers
John Turner
Congratulations on you and the team's amazing achievement, best of luck
for the Final on the 14th.
Which question did you get wrong?

Congratulations John, well done indeed. I know nothing about the St
Andrews affair but I wish you and your team the very best of luck in
the finals.

(fx: bows, scrapes) We are not worthy, we are not worthy...
Very well done. Hope you enjoy yourselves at St Andrews, and the best of
luck.

Success is just a matter of luck. Ask any failure.

Congratulations on reaching the final, it is an excellent achievement to
win a Regional Final - very well done to your team.
As far as experience at St. Andrews is concerned my club has been
fortunate enough to have a team in the finals 4 times since 1996
including last year. We have enjoyed the experience very much, it is a
very special occasion. We were made very welcome, given a tour of the
clubhouse, the highlight of which is the Trophy room and enjoyed an
excellent dinner on the first floor dining room after the quiz. We were
accommodated at the Old Course Hotel with spouse/partner and had a round
of golf the following day at the Dukes Course. Whether or not these
arrangements will be repeated this year I can't say, but they have
applied on each of our 4 visits.
In terms of the difficulty of questions, there is no doubt in our minds
that they are at the 'difficult' end of the spectrum, which is of
course, only to be expected. Last year for example, they included
questions on matters covered in the Appendices, which we had not
experienced before - apparently neither had any of the other finalists -
and as a result the scores were not very high! There were comments made
about this and whether they will do the same this year remains to be
seen.
I can only say that if you are capable of scoring a maximum - you know
the rules pretty well and I reckon, on the night, it all comes down to
'nerves' and whoever can manage those will do very well.
The very best of luck to you and your team, I'm sure you will enjoy
yourselves tremendously.

Thanks very much for your comments and best wishes. Yes this year the
winners get a round on the Old Course and the others play Dukes. In fact
everything you describe sounds unchanged.
Interestingly enough my team has been given a mission to pay particular
attention to the appendices in the next 2 weeks.
Cheers

Hint: Get to grips with the fact that a fellow competitor's ball is an
'outside agency'....and make the connection between this and the
exception in Rule 19-5b!!

As we are planning to travel over a couple of days early, and in
anticipation of not being able to get on the Old Course on Saturday, does
anyone have any recommendations?
Which team will win the USG event at The Abbey in 2004. After consulting
the auguries we said THE SOUTH.

After the CONVINCING WIN earlier this year, I fully expect the new skipper

The trophy is really enjoying the balmy air down 'ere.........

It is unfortunate when a question is posed which can only have one correct
answer. The North will prevail!

T h e - e x t e n d e r ! ! ! !
If the date could be changed for anytime after May 16th, I would be able to
attend again. Although I am sure the South will do just as well without
me.........;o(
