Clubs: Spalding 3-8 irons and 1,3,5 woods (bought as a first

came w/ the set), and a John Letters 62* lob wedge).
Strengths: I'm a linguist by trade, so I can curse in 9 different
languages when (not if!) I play a bad shot. Irons can be
pretty good though, and getting more consistent and
comfortable all the time.
Weaknesses: Woods (driver etc, not Tiger!), though I'm working on it
with some success, and too variable putting (also trying
to improve it). Oh, and fairway shots, chipping,
pitching and sand shots. ;)

I have a very understanding wife and I only live a drive, 3 wood and

evenings in summer and at least once a week in winter. I have been too
analytical in the past which I think has hampered my progress. But now I
just relax and let in swing. When I read some of the advice at the
beginning it seemed unnatural. Holding the club as though it might slip
through fingers. A vardon grip which felt like my little finger had to be
dislocated to ride up on left forefinger. Looking at a spot where the ball
had been a split second ago rather than a spot that I hope it was going to
be (looking up). Eventually it all fits into place and believe me getting
below 100 is a triumph to be savoured. Always remember that every golfer in

I work as an IT Support Analyst for The Blue Cross at their HQ in Burford.
This is a nice easy 9 - 5 job in a country setting surrounded by horses and
open fields. A lot of the staff bring their dogs to work so it is a very
easygoing affair.
Before I started a family I used to play twice a week and got down to 14. My
best score was 76 ( par 69 ). I have broken 80 4 times but now I aim to
break 90. My best or expenses time was a hole in one whilst playing in a
captains day.
I use John Letters irons and Calloway copy 3 wood. I do not even own a
driver and rarely use a wood until latter holes as I am happy using irons
and prefer playing from the fairway.
My 6 golfing hates are as follows:
1 Losing golf balls
2 Hilly courses
3 Tees that are not in line with fairways / greens. I can,t aim 10 degrees
left or right, I always slice it all the time, or worse lose the ball.
4 Wrong yardage's
5 Courses that do not have 100, 150, or 200 yard markers
6 Courses that do not have ball scoops by lakes or rakes by bunkers.
I am writing an internet golf guide www.greenoak.mcmail.com and I therefore
get to play lots of different courses ( many for free ). The prob with that
is then writing a review of a course that you did not like much. I played
Cirencester yesterday and hated it it was 105 years old and felt like it was
10 years old. I lost 4 balls on one hole and 2 on the next. It took 4 more
holes to calm down. Mind you the wind was so strong on 1 hole a par 5 of 560
yards I hit the green with a 3 wood and a 7 iron.. MADNESS. Also 2 of the
par 3 holes the tees did not line up with the green. Not good !!!!!
Anyway thats me .
How about the rest of you.
Happy thwacking
Oscar :-)

Member of Herkenbosch Golf and Country Club since 2 months.
Clubs: 3-wood, 3-5-7-9-SW and a 20-year old putter. All of unkown brand and
probably due to be replaced soon.
Strengths: Chipping, of all things. Most people are amazed how I hit my long
shots so easily
into the woods and how easily I seem to manage to compensate with my
short game. Will probably
lose my touch again soon.
Weaknesses: Long shots from the tee. I will hit between 200 and 250 yards,
but most of the time the
next shot will be a short one back to the fairway.
Best round so far: 87 on four different courses, one in England. And on June
26th,, a magical 39 on
the back 9 (par 36) of my home course (after 6 holes I realized that I
was par for those 6
holes par-par-bogey-par-par-birdie which broke the spell and I finished
with 3 bogey's). With the 51 out,
it is still my record round of 90 on my home course.
Victor.
I tried out the tip of lining up the line of small lettering on the ball
with the hole when putting this morning. It did seem to help. When actually
on the green, I don't think I actually more than 2 putted any green.
I even notched up my first Birdie on the 1st hole.
Aldwickbury Park, although not a particularly long course (6352 yds off the
Whites, 6032 yds off the Yellows) is quite a challenging course of up and
down parkland (formerly farm fields). Although only 3 years old the course
plays like a mature parkland course, having been constructed around mature
tree woodland copses and hedges.
The greens certainly have to be treated with respect as they are loaded with
all sorts of undulations, borrows and slopes.
I'm not sure that Aldwickbury Park has any real "Killer Holes" as such, but
standing, bleary eyed, on the tee of the 421 yds (Whites), Par 4, 1st Hole
with woods all the way down the right and two mature tree copses at 125 yds
and 235 yds on the left can be a pretty daunting prospect for a slicer like
me.
The 320 yds, Par 4, 2nd Hole up hill with a slight dog-leg left, two bunkers
between 180 and 200 yds left centre of fairway and a third guarding the
front left of the two tiered green, placed 50 yds beyond where the fairway
narrows to a 40 yd funnel between two areas of mature trees, can also be
quite an interesting hole.
The 326 yds, Par 4, 9th dog-legs right around a cluster of no less 7 bunkers
and a pond that is just Out of Bounds. The green has another 3 bunkers
around it to capture the approach shot having got to the dog-leg without
needing your bucket and spade.
The 375 yds, Par 4, 10th is quite straight-forward providing you don't
slice. Slicing takes you past the first lake on the right (generally), then
leaves you with a good 5W shot right of the oak tree with about a 150 yd
carry over the second lake on the right to reach the green.
The 440 yds, Par 4, 12th is considered by a lot of members to be the most
difficult hole on the course (actually S.I. 2) slopes down hill and from
right to left all the way to reach the "roller coaster" green. Having played
over a 4ft hedge at 215yds, with a couple of 1-2ft gaps stretching across
the whole width of the fairway, rising to 15ft either side of the fairway.
The 382 yds, uphill and sloping left to right, Par 4, 13th Hole plays back
over the same hedge further up the hillside.
The 177 yds, Par 3, 14th plays down and up to an almost blind green that
slopes right to left, guarded by two bunkers. It plays differently every
time depending on wind strength and direction. The Yellow Tees, depending on
tee position, can vary between an 8I to a 5W.
The 448 yds, Par 4, 15th is downhill all the way, but the green carries on
with the downhill trend, making it very difficult to stop the approach shot
on the green before it runs into the bunker waiting at the back.
The 304 yds, Par 4, 18th leading up to the veranda of the clubhouse, with
Out of Bounds all down the left, is a "longest (5W) drive not in the water"
followed by a "up and under" (7I - SW) shot onto a gently sloping left to
right green surrounded by a horse-shoe lake and guarded by a bunker. The
fairway, left of the lake is quite narrow before another couple of bunkers
and the O.O.B.,slopes left to right into the lake.
Cheers.
Simon.

And to add.. I think I would definitely benefit from lessons, however
after playing now for about 2 years it's a bit tricky changing
things..! I did have one lesson about 6 months ago and it made a
significant difference to my game, but it wasn't too radical.. he did
add that I needed to change things about my swing and that in doing so
my game would suffer, but in the long run....? I think the problem
lies in the fact that who wants to change everything go out and have
an enjoyable round and score 120+, been there done that ! Though I
suppose with those scores you never have to buy the beers at the 19th

Sorry Steve, You didn't mention THE BIG WHITE ROSE before
so I miss-understood you to be a "yuppie teesider" or even worse
a "monkey hanger" -- only kidding!
Hows your game? did you come close to your 95 again?
Thought I was in for a brilliant sub 100 last night, played the
out 9 in 49, but as usual game went from bad to worse
on the 11th, after landing in a ditch with a flagged bottom,
wish I'd lifted it first time now.scored 9.
From then on couldn't get better than d.bogey for the
rest. I'd give the excuse it was the bad light(after 9.30)
but there we go.
Finished with a 108(par72), mind you it was pure
guess work on the 18th, I found my ball after all
my partners had left the course, around 40 yds
from the green mid fairway! also walked off with
2 found balls!
Chris
Tyke and proud of it!
It's OK, I forgive you! :)
>Hows your game? did you come close to your 95 again?
My game's coming OK. I've had to abort a couple of planned rounds, and
was away with the family lasy weekend, so I've only played one round
since, which was 103. Felt lousy, but when it used to feel that bad it
was 120+, so I'm coming on.
Was planning to play a round tonight with my son, but some bummy society
has the course booked up until 6.20pm which wouldn't give us chance to
finish the round, so I've had to re-schedule for tomorrow.
Other than that, I've been at the range a lot, working on my 3W and
driver, as I badly need to improve the % of fairways I hit to improve my
scores generally and have any chance of parring some of the killer holes
here (I can hit about 90% of fairways with an iron, but then have to lay
up with my 2nd shot, so little chance of par). I'm getting sick of
playing only irons off the tee (I don't, but when I give in to the
temptation to use a wood I suffer for it too often), as it feels like
I'm backing down to the course. :) The only one I have been hitting
consistently well is my 5W from the fairway/light rough.
It's working OK - I'm up to maybe 60% straight with the driver and 70%
with the 3W. On the range, anyway. When I'm on the course I still
struggle with the temptation to swing too hard, but I'm getting there.
Main thing I'm trying to groove in is bringing the takeaway a bit
further inside with the woods, to make sure I'm coming inside-straight
at impact.

Know just what you mean. In that sense, even my 95 was a disappointment
- I went out in 45! But then I started thinking I might break 90, never
mind 100 again, and didn't play too well on the back 9. Mind you, even
the 50 on the back 9 was my best score there, by 2 strokes. But I hit a
few topped shots and got annoyed with myself, or it could have been a
lot better.

Isn't that just the way of it. When I look back on all of my best
rounds, including my one sub100, I think how dissappointing, how could I
play so many bad shots, accumulate so many penalty shots, duff so many
putts. I keep forgetting how many good shots I played in the round and
especially how many more than my game this time last year.
I do not suppose we will be happy until we are regularly breaking par
and probably even then we will be thinking 2 bad shots today

I have been playing golf on and off since I was about 14 but having spent
two fantastic days at Birkdale last week, my enthusiasm has been rekindled
and I am dying to play more.
This is also due to me having played a couple of times recently and hitting
the ball better than ever.
I was a member of Whitefield Golf Club until I was 21 when I ceased to be
eligible for the family membership. I simply don't play often enough now to
justify the annual fees (more of that in a mo).
My parents are very keen golfers and my dad is secretary at Whitefield and
basically runs the place. He dropped a bombshell the other day - he said
that if I played regularly he would pay for my membership. But that's my
problem - finding people who are willing to play on a regular basis. The
problem at Whitefield is that there are almost no members in their 20's (I
am 25). So I;d welcome any offers of games in the Manchester area.
I don't have a handicap because I don't play regularly enough but I'd guess
I'd be about a 24. When I played more often I used to keep score and I think
I broke 100 (but not by much) on a regular basis.
My strengths? Well people tell me I have a nice slow swing and I do find
that the harder I try to hit the ball the less distance it travels. My
weakness is without a doubt my atrocious short game.
I am plying tomorrow at the Bolton Municipal course on Chorley New Road
(anyone know it?) - tee off time 12:00 and I can't wait.
And finally (if anyone's interested and/or needs one!) I'm a solicitor
working in Rochdale.
Cheers,
Andy

Yep - they've stopped playing any championship games away from Headingley.
Scandalous or what?
