Not trying to do Justin Fielding's post, but a couple of years back, a
friend of mine was hitting his second into our par 5 17th at Ealing.

Driver off the deck, right on the button, the shot needed to be a real
chaser. He hit it a little thin but it was still moving.

Our eyes followed the low flight of the ball only to see the ball stopped
dead by an unfortunate squirrel running across the fairway.

The poor thing was killed stone dead, but this did not stop our 4 ball all
rolling about on the fairway in hysterics. I hate cruelty to animals but you
had to be there to see just how funny the whole sequence of events was!

A few years ago a friend of mine hit his ball into some woods. When we
went looking for it we found it near a recently deceased bird. A seagull,
I think, although I'm not sure now. We were never completely certain that
the one caused the death of the other, but how certain do you need to be.

A few years ago, I was playing alone and hit a good drive up the (then) 4th
fairway. I was horrified but fascinated to watch it hit a young seagull,
which after one squack, spiralled to the ground in a garden next to the
fairway. I ran up and saw it was still alive. The owner of the house was up
a ladder on the side of the house and I asked him to do the needful. Without
any fuss, he despatched the gull to its home in the sky and threw it in the
bucket. I lost a good 80 yards off my drive.

Playing my very first away match for the team (when I was a member at
Settle) against Kirkby Lonsdale I was in long rough by the side of the ninth
fairway. I could hardly see the ball but with the confidence of the
ignorant beginner I decided that, rather than take a drop, if I chopped down
on it it would get out to the fairway. I glued my eye on the ball and swung
hard. The ball popped out but my clubhead was covered in blood. I had
beheaded a rabbit in the process. Mind you, I am pretty certain it can't
have been in the best of health at the time as it would have run a mile as I
approached otherwise. It made me feel a bit queasy but luckily it upset my
opponent even more and I managed to halve the match when I should have lost
by a mile!!!

Peace & love

Janet
