Do you have any trusted music sources you read on a regular basis that
keep you up to date with what is hot in the Dance/Techno/House scene?

I collect Essential mixes but there are often times when I hear
individual tracks and would like to find out more about the artists.
Sure, I could get the tracklistings and search on those but what I'm
after is a site where I can keep abreast of things.

Any guidance?

Now, Greedy, if I was a suspicious man I'd think this froup was one big
unhelpful pisstake. This is the second time you've gatecrashed one of my
question-time parties looking for fingerfood without bringing anything to
the table. If it happens again I'm going to steal your copy of
'Spitroasting Untermensch'

clickable links, lad. I'll be checking the above but not in any satisfied
state of mind.

I'm not a blinkered chap. Give me a list of artists you'd reccomend as
topnotch and I'll see if I can find some of their music.

Gidday my codec friend, I've been in Wellington for a few days allowing work
to buy large amounts of Belgian beer for me. Anyway, I could answer this
post about 45 times and probably will but as a start, from a kiwi point of
view, we have Kog Transmissions (http://www.nzmusic.com/label.cfm?i=8),
Capital Recordings (http://www.capitalrecordings.co.nz/) and Loop
(http://www.loop.co.nz/releases.htm) which are all up there with the best
electronic offerings in the world IMO. No horrible banging trance music but
loads of thoughtful organic and very funky sounds.

Apart from my nationalistic ponderings I'd advise always going with a funky
base, funk is the natural parent of all dance music and the primo stuff
always understands this. Try international labels such as Ninja Tunes
(http://www.ninjatune.net/home/) Paper Recordings
(http://paperecordings.com/), Nuphonic (http://www.nuphonic.co.uk/), Wall of
Sound (http://www.wallofsound.net/) and Different Drummer
(http://www.diffdrum.co.uk/). By the way, please excuse any Flash, Java and
other shit on these sites and try to dig for the music samples.

If you like Ninja, get really brave and dig into some of that Big Dada hip
hop, seriously fucked up rap music for the 21st, nice...

I'm watching Arse - Brum so will probably be back on this later.

Cheers, Os

Anywhere that has up to date DJ playlists and charts. When I was a serious
collector of vinyl ten or so years ago I'd either be looking for what was
hot on white label or what was due out on the labels that led the way in
the styles I liked. What DJs do you like? What's on their current playlist?

I don't know of any site that is a one stop shop for the hottest vibes, if
there is one at all. The techno/house scene is spread far and wide, DJs
will travel the globe to get exclusive white labels. It can get very
regional too. What your underground record store in Glasgow is flogging you
as the latest tech-house set is going to be very different to what you get
in London, Paris, Ibiza or Rimini. So to keep tabs on all this output is
going to be very tricky indeed.

I focus on albums these days and the best place to get the latest music is
the binary groups with DJ mixes and advance copies of albums, I work
outwards if I like a particular track simply using google. Here are some
sites I have bookmarked

http://www.breakbeat.co.uk/
http://www.soulstrut.com/
http://www.the-breaks.com/ (to search for tracks by sample)

When I check out an artist I'm not always ending up at the same news/review
site so it's a question that interests me too. Tbh, you can't beat radio
when you need to stay informed. Obviously, they don't have to go to print
or tap out web pages - so stay tuned to the right stations, if you follow
the essential mixes you might also want to be checking John Digweed's show,
if he still does it

http://www.kiss100.com/ and http://www.ministryofsound.com/

I expect the major cities of the world have a similar set up ie the big DJs
are affiliated in some way to a radio station or nightclub that has a radio
station and website. I'm more in to hip-hop and RnB so I might check out
http://www.hot97.com/ in New York and work my way from there.

Sorry if that isn't much help, I just keep the radio on.

Great call Oscar! This is essential if you're into breaks, hip-hop, funk
and soundtracks, some nice funky mixes to listen to as well.

Did you see that thread about the guy in DC with the homemade records and
two of the list members basically turned the guy into an underground hero!

Can't wait for the official Mingering Mike album.

Excellent work, Greedy. I downloaded some drum and bass while I was
watching the football and tbh, it sounds like an angry neighbour banging
on the wall, quite unimpressed. 124mb file too.

I've heard Otis but will check out some more of his work and give the
others a whirl. If there are any tracks in particular by those artists
you think I should listen to, let me know what they are.

Get The Complete Goldwax Singles by James Carr, Candi Staton's self titled
CD on the Honest Jon's label, anything by King Tubby but a good starting
point is King Tubby Meets The Rockers Uptown which is credited to Augustus
Pablo(more on him another time), Social Living or Presenting or Rocking Time
by Burning Spear, On Top, Ting A Ling and Party Time by the Heptones.

They should get you a good little soul/reggae selection going for starters.

Hello Cypher, you magnificent bastard. Sorry for the delay in replying.

In a word, no. Tbh, I'm not that up to date these days, especially not when it comes
to house and techno. Most of my dance-oriented listening revolves around breaks and
jazz as I get older and less bouncy, chilled electronica, some funky shit, that sort
of thing. I can't give you any clickable links to read, but I'll be looking at those
posted helpfully by others in the near future.

In the meantime, this is my favourite label for dance stuff over the past four or
five years.

http://www.fingerlickin.co.uk/

And my favourite downtempo radio station is Jazzmusique, from

www.netmusique.com

Although a lot of the stuff they play is just a bit boring and repetitive, I've been
turned on to some really good new acts listening to that station. Good late-night
stuff.

Aside from that, I'm surrounded by people who are passionate about music so I tend to
find I'm exposed to all sorts of new stuff all the time by different people. This
last couple of weeks has been fun, we're switching over permanently to an mp3 server
thingy system at work, kindly built for me by Ollie, head of I.T. and now more or
less ready to go live in the bar. My part in all this has been to assemble the
playlist, with different categories for different times of the day or week. Putting
out staff e-mails across the company, and indeed across friends outside of work as
well, demanding everyone from all different departments to bring in their best CD's
for me to rip to the server and catalogue lovingly, and getting absolutely fucking
buried in the fuckers. Heard loads of good new stuff just doing that. Great fun.
I'm up to about 2,500 new tunes on the server, I'm aiming for ten thousand. Trying
to get some sort of sponsorship deal going with one of a couple of record shops
nearby as well, they scratch my back, I advertise theirs in the bar. We'll see how
that goes.

> I collect Essential mixes but there are often times when I hear

Like I said, friends and stuff are my best source of new music, but also a good local
independant record shop can be a very good friend. Try to get a good rapport going
with a couple of knowledgeable professionals, and if they're worth their salt,
they'll soon build up an understanding of what kinds of thing float your boat and
they'll start pushing decent, appropriate new stuff in your direction each time you
show your pretty face in their shop.

Aside from that, as I think OscarG mentioned, labels are where it's at when it comes
to any sort of dance music. Each label tens to have it's own kind of musical
philosophy, if you like a couple of tunes on one label it's a fairly safe bet you'll
like a lot of their other stuff as well. So, always make a note of the label, not
just the artists, when you hear something that tickles your fancy. Delve deeper, and
you will be rewarded.

Sorry of none of that is very helpful, Oscar's web was excellent, I can only
embellish. Send me an e-mail, though, and I'll send you a present.

www.tunes.co.uk is a good place to go as well. They cover releases from
several dance and funk labels. From good time soul sounds to more
experimental electronica.

Free porn in my e-mail box everyday?

If I just remove the NOSPAM will I get through to you using the remaining
mishmash or is that some sort of code designed to defeat the less
intelligent webbies among which I must unfortuately count myself at this
present moment in time? Or do I remove the obvious, then the numbers and
just use the weeny letters?

Just remove the NOSPAM bit. I'm on blueyonder as well and the numbers and
weeny leeters are the account number they give you. Although Joe could set

Cheers, Kully. I must be more paranoid than I thought, I spent a good 10
minutes trying to crack what I thought was a code. The fact I was left
with 1 extra number after spelling horowitz threw me a curveball. The 007
was obviously a reference to Maxwell Smart and the 8183 was probably a
pointer toward the Van Halen album 5150. It got murkier from there on in.

Cypher,
This is a local South African site: www.milkyway.co.za , go there and follow
the link to "Spinout" and then to archives. There are some really banging
hard house and HARD trance sets available through streaming audio. Hours and
hours of fucking mind bending bass. Might not be exactly what you're looking
for but well worth the listen if thats what you're into!!!......Cunt.

I was following the dialogue between yourself and OscarG recently with
regards to mp3s, I'm not sure if my ISP will let the transfer take place
but its worth a shot, they sure as fuck let all the spam get through.

Btw, my mp3s have an added bonus, if you alter the extension to .jpg it
turns into kiddieporn, can your's do that?
