However "the Republican anthem, 'Fields of Athenry'" ?
and?????
JB
Exactly. He goes on and holds up the Ireland rugby team as an example to
all. The Irish rugby fans sing 'Fields of Athenry' just as passionately as
Celtic fans. The Fields of Athenry was a No.1 hit in Ireland for fuck sake,
hardly a Republican anthem. Celtic have done well to eradicate 'real'
Republican anthems from Celtic Park, and for a journalist to call The Fields
one is ridiculous and feeds ignorant Rangers fans unfounded prejudices.
Also, Neil Lennon tried to say that Irish football would benefit from
bringing the North & Republic together and was howled down. An all-Ireland
football team played against Brasil in the 70s (O'Neill playing) with no
problems, and it should be looked at again.
I understand why the article was made available, but having difficulty with
your response.
You don't find it interesting, but found the need to reply
with.'and?????'...........?
I found both the original, and your reply, interesting.
Wonder why.
"There was an antidote to yesterday's tribal spectacle in Glasgow. It took
place at Lansdowne Road, Dublin, and involved an all-Ireland side comprised
of men from unionist and nationalist, Catholic and Protestant backgrounds.
It was watched by people from all over this island who hold different
political, religious and national allegiances. They were united behind the
men in the green jerseys who defeated France in yesterday's rugby
international."
I'm all for that Dazza. Are you?
Cant see the North adding much to it they are almost as bad as us.

It is a newspaper article, one is expected to form his or her own opinion
following the reading of the article in question. I expect the Observer is
not to your liking as it doesnt contain as many colour pictures as the Sun,
but hey, we can't please everybody.
Daz
No, I cant fucking stand rugby, would bore me to tears.
Daz
Any sporting, political or cultural body which brings Catholics and
Protestants throughout Ireland together in a common goal is a 'good thing'
as far as I'm concerned.
You dont say?
Careful Tony, you're ruining your image of being a "bitter" Tim.
I find the flag issue is trying to make a point that isnt really there
because it happens at many grounds around the world , not just old firm
grounds !
My "And" was because usually Dazza tries to make some point and as he didnt
type it after the link i was waiting for another troll.

At this moment in time I don't think it could be done without causing

Dalkeith not being the West of Scotland. As you know i have some
degree of involvement in such things and this whole issue is going to
become a real political hot potato before very long i fear.
Well, if a few examples of the idea working are lauded in the papers, along
with some strong political decisions it might be a goer. In Scotland anyway.
I keep on forgetting that while I'm from the West I no longer live there.

I don't have a problem with parents being allowed to send their kids to a
non denominational school. Why do you have an issue with parents choosing to
send their kids to a religious school if they believe that is what is best
for them.
Its got feck all to do with football though.
Forgive my ignornace, but WTF are we on about here?
It has nothing to do with rugby either. The Sash has nothing to do with
football, neither does Walk On, I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles, Blue Moon,
Swing Low Sweet Chariot, Rule Britannia, The Great Escape, Viva Espana
..etc. Why shouldn't a group of people at a football match sing whatever
harmless song they want? Do you have a problem with The Fields?
I dont, no, but I can see how it maybe doesnt help matters, if it were up to
me I'd ban Celtic & Rangers fans for singing *any* songs about Ireland.
Extreme I know, but I really wish both sets of fans would concentrate on
football and not the politics/history of a foreign nation.
It isn't foreign to the Irish Celtic supporters or to Celtic fans with Irish
fathers, grandfathers etc.
If you moved to Japan to live would you go out of your way to ensure that
your children grow up completely Japanese? Would you never mention Scotland,
Scotland's history or how proud you are to be Scottish? It's very easy for
Scottish people to tell the children and grandchildren of immigrant Irish,
Pakistani, Indian and etc to forget all about their roots and become
exclusively Scottish, but it doesn't work like that. Ask any Scottish
ex-pats throughout the world about singing songs about the 'Old Country'.
Ireland is a big part of Celtic's history, why shouldn't an Irish song be
sung at Parkhead.
..gee whizz....that's big of you..
> Why do you have an issue with parents choosing to

...because schools are where society teaches common values and the common
values shared by religions are so universal that we don't need to have
separate schools to teach them...if you want to pervert the minds of your
children with medieval mumbo-jumbo, do it behind closed doors - but there's
no way in hell that society should sanction such nonsense by dividing itself
along those lines...religious schools are founded on superiority, prejudice
and preservation of power, they breed division, mistrust and suspicion, they
bring absolutely nothing of benefit to society and only serve to divide
rather than unite...if you're going to allow religious schools for one sect,
then you have to allow them for all - I take it you *do* believe in schools
for the children of Satanists?....what we end up is a society utterly and
artificially fragmented along lines of hocus-pocus mind-control and power
struggles.... and if you're going to give schools to religious sects, why
not to political parties?...why not socialist schools?....or BNP schools for
that matter?....
pb
And why is it only songs about Ireland? What about songs like Rule
Brittania? Should that be banned?

You have no problem with Rangers fans singing Rule Britannia or God Save The
Queen?
Yes, it's called democracy and respecting the views of others. Something
which is clearly beyind you these days.
Gee, you're a really bitter & twisted guy these days. Equating religion with
the BNP
takes the biscuit.
They can sing what they want as long as its not bigotted.
It is Scottish society that has a real problem with groups that are
different. You are correct to say that the inability of the Scottish people
to tolerate others is exacerbated by Catholic schooling, because people who
attend these schools are seen as different. Accordingly, it does appear that
in fact that Scottish Catholics do have the ability to bring an end to the
base bigotry which runs through Scottish society, by moving away from a
separate schooling system.
Catholics are not the cause of the problem> Intolerance in Scotland is.
However, Catholics may have part of the answer. Unfortunately, this solution
will never be achieved, because the more Catholic schools are demonised and
blamed for an ill within our society that is the fault of *all* of society,
the more Catholics will perceive themselves to be discriminated against and
the more they will want to defend their separate schools.
The people of Scotland all have to take the blame and Catholics need to
realise that *they* may have to be the ones to make the sacrifice in order
to eradicate Scotland's shame.
Think about.
TSG
You are correct that tolerance is the key. It's amazing that the atheist can
get away with shocking intolerance towards religion that would not be
acceptable under other circumstances.
Thats a "no" then?
Majority?
The only reason most people want an end to Catholic schooling is because
they're jealous that Catholics have something and they don't. I've no doubt
about that.

You should accept the rights of others with strong convictions to school
their kids as they see fit. Instead you want everyone to follow the model
that *you* deem acceptable. I have no problem with parents who want to send
their kids to mixed schools, that's up to them. Or if they feel home

they feel it is in their children's best interests. Your problem is quite
obviously that you do not respect the views of others.

All children denied the right to religious education and forced to a secular
education just because you happen to be an atheist. I'd say that's pretty
intolerant seeing that probably about 50% of the world's population are not

How gracious of you. The problem with that is that for some, religion is not
a small pigeon hole of their life, it is comprehensive. You are quite happy

Once again, a quite ridiculous point. Are you honestly trying to compare
politics and religion.
So a song about (just for example mind you) how wonderful a political party

If you had actually read the post properly, you would see i was advocating

As an aside what is your opinion of schools that have a specialism?
Are schools that specialise in technical subjects or drama or music as
evil as Catholic schools in your world?

SNIP
if you want to pervert the minds of your
children with medieval mumbo-jumbo, do it behind closed doors - but there's
no way in hell that society should sanction such nonsense by dividing itself
along those lines...religious schools are founded on superiority, prejudice
and preservation of power, they breed division, mistrust and suspicion, they
bring absolutely nothing of benefit to society and only serve to divide
rather than unite.
I must have missed all of that mistrust and suspicion at the Catholic
schools I attended. If that is the total usefulness of Catholic schools, why
do many parents of non Catholic children mainly from Asia choose to send
their children to a Catholic school?
...Farm Boy!..welcome back, where *have* you been?..sewing seeds or

any event, go away and rephrase the question and come back when it's

...who mentioned Catholics?...ah, that's right *you* did...must be that
Catholic education with it's in-built persecution complex...what was it that
made you think of catholicism?..was it the "medieval mumbo jumbo" part?...or
the "prejudice and preservation of power" part?

The first couple of words kind of gives it away dont you think? My comment

..secularism is the absense of religion and is free of religious doctrine,
you cannot be indoctrinated by something which has no doctrine....

...of course...what's the difference?...you'll find, if you care to study
history even just a little, that they are very much the same - both of them
are control mechanisms...and in the case of religion, control mechanisms of
the basest and most primitive kind...

have schools for satanists and failed to explain why political schools are
"ridiculous" but religious schools are desirable....it seems that what you
want are schools for "others with strong convictions" - as long as these
convictions are religious convictions, religious convictions of an
"accepted" religion mind you, and not strong political convictions for

Drama schools are pure evil. Have you ever met a group of drama
students?
I have no problem with it.
I do, however, have a problem with state funding for such endeavours.

Once again, a line used to make it appear that Catholic schools cost extra
money. If there were no Catholic schools, the remaining schools would need
to be bigger, or more built. Classroom sizes would be larger so we would
need more teachers. So the "stae funding" issue is a red herring.

..and this is the school system that you're holding up as a model - where
they don't even teach basic adjectives?
pb
You obviously missed this bit:
"You are correct to say that the inability of the Scottish people
to tolerate others is exacerbated by Catholic schooling, because people who
attend these schools are seen as different. Accordingly, it does appear that
in fact Scottish Catholics do have the ability to bring an end to the
base bigotry which runs through Scottish society, by moving away from a
separate schooling system"
...but we all have our off days so I'll let it go this time.
Made a lot more sense than normal ;-)
Go on, answer it, it might be mildly grammatically mangled but you
know fine well what i mean.
..how kind...but really, since all you did was describe the current
situation, rather than advocate a solution or course of action, there's no
need...
pb
...the grammar of the question, whilst inelegant, is not the issue...if you
have a serious question to ask, by all means pose it seriously and we shall
ruminate upon it...oh, and do try to avoid using 'catholic' as a substitute
for 'religious' schools, since the brand of religion is quite irrelevant...

Like I said, ask a sensible question and you'll get an answer.
Annoying isn't it?
LOL. You should try going to Turkey or Egypt and to see what it's like to be
indoctrinated with secularism

I actually said that religious schools are the choice of many people. You
can be free to send your kids to whatever school you want and a
Muslim/Catholic/Jewish parent who wants their children to be brought up in a
religious environment, not a school where religion is pigeon-holed into half
an hour per week, should have that right.

Every question? Really? Anyway, this is something you excel at. Don't throw
your toys out of the pram when you get the same treatment.
> and since you don't seem to have an independent or considered thought

LOL. Mr Pot, I'd like you to meet my friend, Mr Kettle Black.
The question is a serious one. You bracket religiously slanted
education with politically slanted education. It is therefore not
unreasonable to enquire as to your views on education that is slanted
towards other subjects. Now given that your argument appears to be
based largely on the absurdity of a Satanist School (though one might
suggest that the Rangers Academy has a similar effect.....) and a
political school i can understand why you might like to avoid real
world examples. So what is it? Do you consider anything other than the
exact same education for all to be harmful or is it simply the
teaching of religion you object to?
Mmm dont know what went wrong there .
Ross
afc
..it's really hard to know where to start with this, since you've managed to
grab the wrong end of every stick possible ...but ok, let's start at the
beginning with your term "religiously slanted education"...by seeking to
equate an entire separate school system based on religion with specialists
schools whose function is to teach certain subjects to a high standard you
are comparing apples and oranges in a way which is frankly ludicrous...drama
and music schools do not seek to teach only one type of music, do not
profess that only one type of music is *the* true music, the dance schools
do not deny equal employment rights to practicioners of jazz dance in
preference to those who practice classical dance, they do not insist that
children be able to sing and mime peeling an orange before being taught
arithmetic, geography or biology..nor has dance or music been the cause of
social division, violence and war since time began...we are not talking
about schools who teach specialist religions nor schools which specialise in
religion we are talking about minority schools which teach the same
curriculum as majority schools but whose reason for separation
is...is...hmmm..what exactly *is* their reason again?....oh that's right,
because they want to promote tolerance and harmony by insisting on
separation and inequality of rights...
..secondly, my argument is *not* based on the absurdity of Satanist Schools,
but rather the absurdity of claiming that everyone has the right to send
their children to the religious school of their choice, then to turn round
and deny that choice to Satanists or Pagans or indeed Atheists....my
viewpoint is that if we are going to have schools for one sect, we should
have them for all sects - you name it, Pagans, Heathans, Baptists, Mormons,
Seven Day bloody Adventists, the lot...
...and if you're going to have schools based on religion, why not schools
based on political philosophy?...many political movements, of both left and
right, have had at their core deeply held beliefs about how society can
function in a way that benefits its members best and about how people should
behave with and to one another and yet the idea of schools being divided
along lines of political is held up as ridiculous - although nobody as yet
has been able to explain quite why...
..and of course no Grahamesque post would be complete without the slide into
hyperbole and flight of fancy...I have no objection to the teaching of
religion as such - much as I find it distaseful- nor have I even hinted that
the exact same education for all is desirable, however there is a world of
difference in teaching religion as part of a national curriculum and
dividing our entire society along outdated, irrational and divisive
religious lines...
..oh, before I go..do you believe in dividing the school system according to
religion?
pb
