Plus point - Cook looked very calm and assured from what I saw of him in an
hour watching this morning. The start of a long Test career maybe? Not sure
what the team will do if Cook continues in good form and Tres returns. Who
would shift down to 3?
Pity no-one could make more than a start today.
Richard
If Cook holds on to a place I guess Cook has to move down the order as
the junior player, but who gets dropped? We've already got 7 players
after 6 batting places (Tres, Strauss, Bell, Vaughan, Pietersen,
Collingwood & Flintoff), now we might have a seventh. Collingwood's
innings here after his 96 and 80 in the 3rd Test in Pakistan, at
Lahore, makes him rather hard to drop... And that's without forgetting
the pressure that Shah & Key have been putting on things... Ah well,
Maybe Vaughan's knee will keep him out of the side for a while.
Still, one 60 doesn't cement a place in the side...
Key is injured - which puts him at a considerable disadvantage. Shah has
been out of contention for so long that unless he gets into the side *and*
does very well you can pretty much forget about him too.
But that still leaves a more contenders than places - something unfamiliar
to the England selectors for some time.
I don't imagine they will break up Trescothick and Strauss and the worst
batsman, or rather least reliable, is probably Vaughan but he's the captain
so they won't drop him either. I guess that leaves Bell, Pietersen and
Freddie of the regular players with Cook and Collingwood the two looking to
come in. Obviously they won't drop Fred, so I guess it's Bell and
Pietersen who are most at risk which means both will need to perform in
this series. Neither has exactly got off to an ideal start but because
both are relatively new themselves I think Cook will have to wait on the
outside until someone else plays themselves out of the team.

I also agree that it's premature to say that Cook will go straight into
an automatic selection spot. He looks good and has had a great record
at junior levels, but time will tell...
I think Collingwood's the least talented of the bunch, but I do like
his attitude and his composure (I reckon that's what makes him a good
ODI player), and he's doing the business at the mo. Sadly if I'm being
hard nosed though, talent matters, so I'd edge him out if everyone was
fit.
So I guess that means I'd go back to the 2005 Ashes lineup of
Trescothick, Strauss, Bell, Vaughan, Pietersen & Flintoff, with Cook,
Collingwood, Shah, Joyce & Key on the sidelines...
I guess that kind of augurs well for the future.
It would do if the established players did their job with some degree of
consistency. The sad thing about today was how ordinary a lot of the Ashes
guys looked. Strauss & Pietersen gave it away, the latter criminally. Fred
should have gone before reaching double figures and, once again, looked
nothing like a top 6 batsman overseas. Jones once again played some pretty
shots before missing one that would have hit. Partially, of course, they
are seriously under-cooked, but so are the 2 guys that passed 50 today.
They just don't seem to have the patience to build a substantial innings,
and there was no sign that the lessons of Pakistan had been remotely taken
on board. Pity, really.
Cheers
David
The sub continental tracks need attritional players, as England found out in
Pakistan. The likes of Bell suit these tracks and Key would to a certain
extent. The flashier stuff from Pietersen, Jones (G) and Flintoff needs
saving until we're back home. Collingwood strikes me as adapting well to
whatever pitch is served up.
Still injured? I find that very difficult to believe, What's wrong with
him? RH

His wallet is too heavy from sky fees, and it has broken
his hip pocket. Speaking of hips, Giles was on the sky studio
team. Waffling to Charlie Coleville[sp].

Key was looking quite svelte!
I wonder if Giles' future lay in the studio commentating on England and not
playing for them if Panesar kicks on this series...

He's had surgery and was never going to be available until the new
season! Why would they lie?
