About 30 years ago I had a book (still do, but it's 'stored' somewhere) by
the late Bill Frindall. I think it was the Kaye Book of Cricket Records,
and it had an interesting list of number of England caps (and number of
Tests captained) by players from each f/c county.

With the help of CricInfo and other websites and books, I've collated
some facts & figures. No guarantee that they are completely accurate :-)

641 individuals have played for England (20 have represented two counties
and three (Botham, DeFreitas & Chris Lewis) represented three.

The nine who were capped without being a regular f/c county player were:

Leland Hone - Played in one Test on Lord Harris' Australian tour in
1878/79. Had two previous f/c appearances for MCC vs. Oxford U. &
Cambridge U. in 1878.

Charles Coventry - had no previous f/c experience before touring
South Africa with Major Warton's 1888/89 team. He had represented
Worcestershire, but they were then a minor county.

Basil Grieve - also on Warton's 1888/89 tour. He had no previous (or later)
f/c experience.

Joseph McMaster - a third member of Warton's 1888/89 touring team with
no former or later f/c experience. Like Hone he was an Irishman.

Victor Barton - toured South Africa with Walter Read's 1891/92 side. He
had played for Kent 1889-90 and later played for Hampshire 1895-1902,
but made his sole Test appearance during his five-year break from the
county scene.

Audley Miller - played one Test on Lord Hawke's 1895-96 South African
tour. Represented minor county Wiltshire for 25 years and made some
appearances for the MCC.

Alfred Archer - his only Test on Lord Hawke's 1898-99 tour of South
Africa was his f/c debut. He later made occasional f/c appearances for
Worcestershire.

Sydney Barnes - played in four Tests while with Lancashire, but his 23
other caps came while he was playing in the Staffordshire leagues.

David Townsend - success in the Oxford U. XI led to three caps on the
1934/35 West Indies tour, but he never 'progressed' to county cricket.
The last England player who never played for a f/c county.

There is a case for adding Tony Lock to the above list. He made 47
appearances for England while at Surrey before transferring to
Leicestershire. He played for Leics from 1965 to 1967, returning to
play for Western Australia each winter. He was called to join the
England team as replacement for Fred Titmus early in 1968 after his
last appearance for Leicester. Was he still a Leicestershire player
when he made his final two appearances for England?

The same scenario has also developed with some other players who
moved to new counties after the end of a season and played winter
Tests before their first appearance for their new team. I've tried
to assign them to their new team in such circumstances.

What a lot of data !

This one caught my eye though - I was surprised to see that it's 6
years since Yorkshire have had an England debutant. It made me wonder
of the 5 counties to have gone longest without contributing to the
England XI, who the most likely next-in-line might be for a call-up?

Derbys: Clare?
Glam: Harris?
Yorks: Rashid?
Worcs: Davies?
Leics: (too awash with Kolpak to find a name...)
