If Broad, Bairstow and Compton play together for England in a Test this year will that be a record for players who had dads our grand-dads play for England?

I think the only England father/son pairs were:

son's Test career
DL & JM Bairstow [2012-]
BC & SCJ Broad [2007-]
AR & MA Butcher [1997-2004]
MC & CS Cowdrey [1984-88]
J Hardstaff sr. & jr. [1935-48]
L & RA Hutton [1971]
IJ & SP Jones [2002-05]
FT & FG Mann [1948-49]
JH & JM Parks [1954-67]
A & RJ Sidebottom [2001-09]
MJ & AJ Stewart [1989-2003]
FW & MW Tate [1924-35]
CL & DCH Townsend [1934]

And grandfather/grandson:

DCS & NRD Compton [2012-]
MF & CT Tremlett [2007-11]

Dean Headley could be included in both categories, with the caveat that
his father (RGA) & grandfather (GA) played for the West Indies. His
career was 1997-99.

Without cross-checking it's possible (though unlikely) that Butcher,
Jones & Sidebottom played togther.

As a footnote, two other England players had sons who played for
different countries - Frank Hearne & the Nawab of Pataudi.

They did not (Butcher and Sidebottom never played together), but Butcher,
Jones and Stewart all played against India at Lord's in 2002 (Jones's debut)
and at Brisbane in 2002/03 (Jones not for long, of course).

Bairstow, Broad and Compton have already played together at Mumbai and
Auckland.

Any known case of four successive generations having played FC cricket
anywhere around the cricketing world?

Yes, because David Townsend's son Jonathan played a few times for Oxford University. (Frank Townsend didn't in fact play for England, but he did play for Gloucestershire).

Also Ernest, Colin, Chris and Fabian Cowdrey. Ernest played one FC match,
for Europeans v Indians at Madras in 1926/27.

New Zealand seems quite likely to throw up an instance or two, since
cricket there is run largely on dynastic principles.

The Burtons (HGEL, HEL, JEL and JW) almost managed it, but JW only made it
as far as Auckland U-23s.
