Sacked Yorkshire head coach Andrew Gale has been charged by the England and Wales Cricket Board over a historic Twitter post that resurfaced during the club’s racism scandal.

The ECB, which had charged Gale and another six of the crisis county’s current or former players over the scandal in June, filed an additional charge against him after he refused to attend a disciplinary hearing into the case.

Gale, who broke his silence last month to deny “each and every” accusation made against him and brand the ECB’s investigation a “witch hunt”, has now been charged in relation to a tweet he wrote in 2010 that included the words: “Button it y--!”

It resurfaced in November days before the same fate befell Azeem Rafiq, the chief whistle-blower in English cricket’s racism scandal, who it emerged sent anti-Semitic messages to a fellow cricketer in 2011.

A spokesman for Rafiq declined to comment on whether his client, who last year apologised over the exchange, had also now been charged.

Yorkshire had initially suspended Gale pending a disciplinary hearing into his own message, which was sent in reply to the then head of media of Leeds United, Paul Dews.

Gale was sacked following a mass cull of Yorkshire’s entire coaching staff, only for the club to admit in May that unfair dismissal complaints by him and five of his former colleagues were “well founded”.

They now face paying compensation and legal costs that could run into hundreds of thousands of pounds, having already ended their toxic legal battle with the first of those suing the county for firing her in the wake of the racism scandal.

The club’s ex-captain, who became their head coach in 2016, told Jewish News at the time: “This post is part of a conversational thread between Paul Dews and myself. Paul worked for Leeds United Football Club at the time and I am an avid Huddersfield Town fan. The reference is to a chant that was prevalent at the time in relation to Leeds fans.

“Within a few minutes of the post, Paul called me and explained the meaning of the word and that it was offensive to Jews. I was completely unaware of this meaning and removed the post immediately. You must have been sent a screenshot of the post that someone took at the time and waited 11 years to release. I would never have used the word had I been aware of its offensive meaning and I have never used it since.”

If Gale claims that he was unaware that "yid" is offensive, then he is
either more of a liar than our resident racist or (and this is hardly
believable) he is even stupider and more ignorant than our resident
racist. I had some slight sympathy for Gale before this revelation;
now I have none.

And if that's how bad things were at the club, I can see exactly why
the new management reckoned that getting rid of the lot of them was
the only way forward. If the racism is that deeply embedded, then
there's little chance that a spot of diversity training is going to
fit the bill at all.

'Whoever tells you the Irish are welcoming of foreigners, especially English or half English people are liars who are very privileged. Ireland is the same as any other rural community, it doesn’t like outsiders. I was born in England but came to Ireland at about 4. My entire upbringing was in the Midlands in Ireland in my Dad’s native area. I attended a Gaelscoil. I did Irish dancing, camogie, actually love Irish trad music and can speak Irish. We were 8 miles from the nearest village, 30 minutes drive from the nearest town. I had an absolutely awful time at school and in my community. I was constantly bullied and what was worse, the adults who were supposed to look out for me, teachers, cousins whose kids were my age actively encouraged the mockery, the jokes and told me I needed to speak a certain way and act the way they wanted to fit in. My uncle ripped off my parents financially and stole stuff on multiple occasions and if my Dad had married an irish woman who went to the local church, it would have been completely different. As it was, the uncles and aunts acted as if his behaviour was acceptable and my mum was making a big deal over nothing and isolated her. They would always invited out my Dad, never my mum. I was bullied throughout school and nearly dropped out. I was assaulted, had my stuff stolen and was constantly called a black and tan and told to go back to my own country. That I caused the famine and I was going to hell because I had no interest in church. I had a few friends but often I would find out they were talking behind my back or would drop me. One time no one turned up to my birthday party and their parents blamed me when my mum called them out for getting too excited and expecting them to drop everything. I had sent the invites out a month before. Everyone had originally RSVP’ed and on the Day all 10 guests made excuses. Honestly to this day I am terrified a lot of my friends secretly hate me even though they are good people. I had a teacher called McCarthy make the whole class laugh at me for saying after being asked that I might like to be a vet. Luckily I kept working thanks to a few (really a few) good teachers who did their job and my Mum, Dad and english grandparents. I actually got into Trinity College Dublin but did History because of my past experiences. But I am now continuing my third level studies this time in STEM whilst I work in pharma.My uncles and aunts were nice to me but I always felt bad for my mum.

My mother was always treated as a social outcast by the majority for years. She worked as an EMT for the Irish Red Cross, joined marathons and was always giving gifts of eggs, fruit, veg, breads and cakes to people we knew. It was almost like because she was a good mum and someone who enjoyed helping the community without being Irish or religious made it worse. She was never told if the school pick up changed at the last minute and teachers hide the fact that two of my siblings were dyslexic for a whole year and literally couldn’t read even though my mum kept trying to bring it up and the teachers would laugh her down as being unqualified and that it was normal. She had to fight for every little thing that many parents seemed to take for granted.

It was only when a load of people from Dublin moved down that we actually felt like we were legitimate members of the community. They were more secular, more into integration and less about class. But by then I was finishing school

I moved to Dublin and then to England for a couple of years but I missed my home. People in England are much more politically correct, especially about the colonial past are often are quote self deprecating to the point I want to say “You know you didn’t poison the potatoes and kill my ancestors personally right?”. But I wasn’t comfortable despite that so I came back. I still get people calling me a tan or making fun of my accent. I still get depressed about it and don’t feel I belong in Ireland or England. But I am proud of being a halfling because I appreciate other people more, especially people like me born of 2 opposing cultures.

It messed up a lot for me but now that I am doing well I had a few people try to talk to me or friend me. Honestly they can fuck off and I hope they are as miserable in their lives as they made my entire childhood for me. I don’t need to forgive them but I can dismiss them. I met a lot of immigrants here in Dublin that deal with racism all the time but a lot of Irish people dismiss it because “Ireland is welcoming.” I have a good community now, good friends, a good job, partner and family life and everyday I am grateful for it.
