On the BBC quiz "Pointless" the other day, the final question was
"Name a bowler who's taken more than 300 Test wickets".

For those who haven't seen it: the aim in "Pointless" is to give
obscure but correct answers: specifically in the final round you need
to give an answer that *none* of a group of 100 people gave when asked
the same question beforehand. (These people are giving as many answers
as they can think of in 100 seconds).

The contestants on the show (who have three guesses) were clearly
aiming for obscure answers and tried "Shoaib Akhtar", "Jim Laker" and
"Jason Gillespie", and thus failed since none of those is a correct
answer.

What answers would you have tried?

I was watching the show, and came up with Fred Trueman, Lance Gibbs and
Waqar Younis, the latter two of which would have been pointless.
(Perhaps surprisingly for a British show, another of the pointless
answers was Bob Willis.)

I saw that. My initial thoughts were Trueman & Gibbs.

Gibbs is obviously a runner, plus Ntini (difficult name to suddenly
recall) and I suspect Vettori because (1) he plays for NZ and (2) I
doubt whether most people think he has taken that many wickets. RH

Vettori was pointless, and I think that Ntini was too.

'I believe Vettori, Donald, Willis, Lillee, Marshall, Vaas, Ntini,

If Donald was "pointless", I'd be surprised if Pollock wasn't. Lee and
Harbhajan seem like the other likely candidates.

' were all listed as

Quite surprising (and disappointing) given that both held the record.
Likewise (probably more so) Lillee.

Well there are often cricket questions on 'Eggheads', but this one cropped up
around the same time as the 'Pointless' one.

Q: Which West Indian cricket captain also represented Antigua in the football
World Cup?

The answer is fairly well known and if not could be guessed - which CJ did.
Viv Richards of course.

I have a problem with that answer though. It cropped up about 3 years ago
in rec.sport.cricket, and I did a bit of research at that time.

Antigua & Barbuda have never qualified for the WC, so any matches must have
been in the qualifying competition. They entered the competition in 1974, 1986,
1990, 1994, 1998 & 2002 - probably more recently too. IVAR was still just
young enough to have played in the 1986 competition, but he was actually
touring England with the Windies when those matches took place (Aug 1984).

So, the only possible WC matches he might have played in were in the 1974
qualifiers, of which there were four. All of them took place in Nov/Dec
1972:

Nov 10 lost 11-1 to Trinidad & Tobago at Port of Spain
Nov 19 lost 2-1 " St John's [the Rec]
Dec 03 lost 6-0 Suriname "
Dec 05 lost 3-1 " "

Both the 'home' & 'away' matches vs. Suriname seem to have been played at
The Rec.

The details can be found at this link (scroll down to 1974):

http://www.rsssf.com/tablesa/antig-intres-detwcq.html

The data also lists the names of the 11 players (plus substitutes for the
two T&T games). None of the players were named Richards.

The 1986 qualifiers did include Mervin Richards, who is Sir Viv's brother
(& Trevor, who is unrelated).

It's just possible that Viv came on as a sub in one or both Suriname
games, or that he was simply 'on the bench', or in the training
squad. Or it may be just a myth.

Those 4 games in 1972 were A&B's first Internationals and they did not
play again until Feb & Oct 1978.

This suggests one obvious possibility: that IVA Richards is not the
right answer to the question.

There are several websites (including Wikipedia) which claim that he did play
for Antigua in the 1974 qualifying. Most of them claim that he is the only
person to play World Cup football and cricket - except the football claim
seems to lack credibility.

It's certainly a myth of long standing - it's a trivia question I
first heard 20 or so years ago (with Viv Richards as the answer).
