Can someone please explain what the term actually means? I thought it meant
play for the country but it seems to mean far more than that.

Cheers

If you play for your country you automatically get awarded a cap.

For county sides you get your cap usually when you become a recognised
member of the first team, ie you are playing regular first team
cricket and are seen as a part of that side rather than someone who
fills in occaisionally. Being awarded your cap means a pay rise and
in some counties other benefits like a car

Thanks Steve. Is the cap awarded when playing for your country, as opposed
to your county, different?

Yes, you get a county cap and a country cap. It is of course possible
to get your country cap before you get your county cap

Also, you get your country cap immediately you play international cricket,
which, as Steve explained earlier, is not the case with your county cap.
