A clobbering dished out Surrey. Stuff I saw:

- Davies was superb. Plenty of shots, controlled aggression etc. - getting back to form after being affected like some of Surrey were post-Maynard's death. Hopefully he can eke his way into the England team.
- Ansari was very impressive. Looks thoughtful and confident. At one point pushed back Smith to the boundary so happy to move his skipper about!
- Smith also was predictably aggressive. One odd moment happened though when a wicket was taken and all the players gathered to congratulate Lewis and he just stayed in the outfield.
- Vince looked very useful until he lost his wicket to a slack shot
- Was looking forward to seeing Danny Briggs bowl but he looked flat in comparison to the Surrey spinners (Batty, Ansari)
- Good bank holiday crowd - Pavilion 85% full, other stands (that were open) about 25%
- Laughably poor and understaffed bars as ever. Nowhere is more clueless. Anywhere.

Don't complain about understaffed or over busy temp bars staff, it's
an excellent scenario. Use the head and you can scam them all day long
for free beer.

I think Max's idea of temp bar staff is a bit different from those you
find at The Oval. They're temporary as far as The Oval goes, but
they're effectively full-time employees of the caterers and move
around the various outlets depending on which is holding an event that
day. The people in The Oval members' bars yesterday will almost
certainly be in the Warner and Allen Stands at Lord's come next
Thursday. They know what they're doing and are used to coping with
crowded bars. The best you can hope for is to strike up a relationship
which helps you get served quicker.

Cheers,

Mike

SCENE: LORD'S TEST. TAVERNERS. SATURDAY
BARMAN: Hey you look a bit familiar. Were you at Chester-le-Street in 2011?

PUNTER: No... I missed that one.

BARMAN: Didn't you rip me off for two pints of Carlsberg?

PUNTER: Not me. Some other punter.

MANAGER: Was machen-Sie hier? Good luck!

PUNTER: Thank you! Oh cripes!

HE FLEES. THEY CHASE HIM AND CAPTURE HIM.

CURTAIN.
