I'm compiling a list of weather presenters in the regions. Could you please
let me know if you have a 'real' presenter in your region, their name,
whether you think they are a Meteorologist or not, and the station e.g. BBC
Scotland, BBC Northeast, Westcounty Television etc.

many thanks

There is a guy on BBC News 24 - I think his name is Dan (posh sounding
accent) who is ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS! I think he should be given his own
chat show or something. He tends to be on early at the weekends - has
anyone else seen him - you'll know if you have!

Apart from Dan, my favourites are Francis Wilson on Sky News, Rob McElwee
on BBC and Jim Bacon (ex-BBC?) on Anglia TV.

Regards,

Steve.

yes! I think I saw him (Dan?) when I spent several months being very
depressed earlier this year. Other than that, I don't really watch TV in
term time (prob. for the best!).
However, I have seen Jim Bacon, he's great (though I don't know why) and
Rob McElwee is _by far_ the best I have ever seen - give that man a pay
rise!

Whatever happened to Ron Lobeck?? He was rubbish - the only thing he could
ever say with enthusiasm was 'Goodnight, here's the summary' - he turned
into some kind of celebrity over the TVS/Meridian region.... if _he_ can
do it - so can anyone.

any chance of topless weather forecasting??? (just a joke! I don't want to
see Michael Fish topless...)

cheers
rob

I'm inclined to agree that his style, ease of presentation coupled with
the amount of information that he gets across in an easily understood
manner, makes him the best.

My wife would like to start a fan club for other reasons!

I like the way he tries to get _useful_ information across - and
occasionally educates the viewer a little more rather than the usual 'It's
going to be cloudy' routine. That has to be a good thing.

Dear old Ron was the author of many classic meteorological cock-ups.
My favourite was his annual Christmas pearl of wisdom regarding the
probability of a White Xmas, viz
"To my mind the odds are 50-50 : it either snows or it doesn't".
If only this were true of the jackpot on the National Lottery : I
either win it this Saturday or I don't. So the odds are 50-50.
When he first uttered this I assumed it was a joke but he repeated it
with such monotonous regularity, year after year, that I began to
think he meant it seriously.
As for his forecast of a 'few wintry showers down the east coast [of
Kent]' for one particular winter weekend .... well the rest, as they
say, is history. Suffice it to say that I couldn't make it into work
for three days.

I think it was Ron who said after the stormy conditions in early
January this year, that things will be turning much calmer for the
next few days (or words to that effect).

Cue Selsey tornado ....

Oooops.. I thought she sounded as if she had quite a bit of experience,
but she never sounds confident when doing the forecasts. I guess it's
because she's relatively new and working with Harry Gration must be
quite un-nerving :o)

Don't the BBC South presenters come from the Southampton Weather Centre,
which presumably means they are Met Office employees? The regular
forecaster for several years up until a year or so ago was excellent,
but shamefully I have forgotten her name - Helen something, I think.

BBC local weather forecaster for the Midlands is Shefali Oza (I think I've
spelt it correctly). As far as I know from work experience at the Met Office
in B'ham, she is a qualified meteorologist, although she was never there!
Often seems to be all over the Midlands, courtesy of Midlands Today.

Hmm, I think the 'Helen' that John Hall was originally thinking of was Helen
Griffin, who now works in the International Forecast Unit (IFU) in the NMC.
Can't seem to remember Helen Young ever on BBC South, but I could be wrong.

Jon.

At BBC South West in Plymouth we have the UKs longest standing weather
presenter, Craig Rich. He has been presenting the weather for Spotlight
for donkeys years. Before that he was both a master mariner in the
merchant navy and a lecturer at Plymouth Polytechnic/University. He
recently celebrated his 60th birthday and is still going strong.

In contrast, his opponent on Westcountry TV used to be a farmer. Ron
Bendle tends to rely on sea-weed for his foreasts, and doesn't really
know anything about meteorology!

Andy.

Story goes that she was walking down the corridor in BBC Pebble Mill
