Here in Israel the tradition is not to drive on Yom Kippur. If you're
on foot, how will traffic jams impede your progress?

The problem is the 20 minutes or so after the end of the fast. Many people
drive to shul before the fast then leave their cars there and walk home
after Kol Nidre and back on Yom Kippur morning. After the fast people want
to get home asap. Certainly here in Golders Green there are a lot of hungry
drivers driving fast and I imagine it is the same in St. John's Wood where
there are a number of large shuls. The argument in the newspaper is,
however, spurious since if the cricket match had been played in daylight it
would necessarily end well before Yom Kippur ended at night. The article
suggested the cricket might have ended at 6pm; Yom Kippur was out shortly
before 8p.m. so no problem
