It would seem that, unusually, there are no Jews in the new coalition
government though many ministers have a pro-Israel record.
The best the JC could find is co-chairman of the Conservative party which is
not a government appointment.

Oliver Letwin is Jewish.

Just wait; within a few weeks we may be in the throes of a full-on
Cain-and-Abel scenario (as the press have tastefully described it)
between the Milibands for the leadership of the Labour party.

I think that Jews are generally over-represented in British politics.
Women, Asians and Muslims are very under-represented.

By 'represented' I don't mean that they have or don't have good MPs
representing them and speaking for them; what I mean is that MPs and
members of government do not reflect the sexual or ethnic or religious
composition of the country as a whole.

Maybe reflect is a better word than represent.

Oliver Letwin represents the people of West Dorset, of whom only a
minority are Jewish. Except on a handful of issues, Jews don't speak
as Jews - there's no body of Talmudic literature on whether to cut the
deficit by raising taxes or by reducing expenditure, for instance.
Even on Jewish-related issues like Israel, or censorship of Holocaust
deniers, Jews don't agree, so Oliver Letwin's policy may not be the
one a Jewish voter would like to see.

Well I knew he was Jewish but I didn't know he was in the Government. A
little googling shows that he is Minister for Policy, whatever that means,
but I didn't see it reported in the main press. Would he be one of the
Tories who had to reduce his expectations because of room being found for
Lib Dems in the cabinet?

So there is a strong possibility that in 5 years time we will have the first
Jewish Prime Minister since Disraeli.
