Another mind boggling story (mind boggling for me at least) coming out of mountaineering.

Elvira Shatayeva was the leader of the doomed all female Soviet team climbing Mt Lenin in 1974. The team got into severe trouble near the summit of the mountain. And had to attempt the descent in difficult weather conditions.(wind 145kph temp -40C) Elvira could have saved herself, but she refused to leave her team. She died with all her team. Selfless heroism.

The circumstances in which the group perished are by no means clear, nor
is it certain that Elvira could have saved herself had she continued the
descent on her own.

Journalist and climber Anatoly Ferapontov, in his book The Ascenders
draws attention to certain inconsistencies that arose following
inspection of the campsite: “One of the panoramic shots contains a
clearly visible rock with a tea kettle placed on it… the blizzard would
have blown it away. As for the torn tents - there had been no blizzards
in the area strong enough to tear up a fastened tent. It could only have
been torn by a person in a state of hysteria.”

Obviously is your account is correct, we should honour her selfless
heroism. As there are no surviving eye-witnesses, perhaps one should not
get carried away.

Interesting point Ken. I must admit to my haste in believing the one account i heard and was obvioiusly moved. But even in the account i heard it was stated that the Russian team had refused some er "male" help....and this refusal of help may have contributed to the sad end ......perhaps i just wanted to beleive in the act of heroism as a good example for the Christian....
thanks for the heads up.

We can certainly honour those who die in the attempt to save others.
