Regine Wlassitschau, public relations officer at the German nonprofit
pro familia, a professional association that focuses on sexual and
reproductive health and rights, told Medscape German Edition that
fundamental Christian groups are often involved. For example, the 40
Days for Life campaigns have besieged pro familia counselling centres in
Frankfurt, Pforzheim, Passau, Rüsselsheim, Stuttgart, and Kiel twice a
year for 40 days at a time.

Abortion opponents have also launched monthly day-long sieges of
counselling centres in Münster and Munich, in addition to sending them
defamatory letters, emails, and plastic embryos by post.

Our government has published a consultation paper on a law establishing
"exclusion zones" around abortion clinics. On the whole I think that
proposed legislation is reasonable - police are instructed that they
cannot prosecute people for silently praying inside the zone, for example.

However I was concerned about the stipulation that it is forbidden to
try to "influence" people inside the zone. While I might agree that huge
pictures of aborted foetuses should not be allowed, posters or stands
offering positive alternatives - like adoption - should be allowed, even
within 150m of an abortion clinic.

God bless,
