US surgeons transplant a PIG heart into a human in world first: Dying
handyman, 57, who was suffering heart failure is 'doing well' three days
after receiving new genetically-modified organ.

David Bennett, 57, has been living for three days with a pig heart.
Doctors transplanted the organ in a last ditch to save Bennett's life,
who has been bedridden on a heart-lung bypass machine. The procedure
took nine hours to complete. Bennett is breathing on his own without a
ventilator, but is still using a ECMO machine that helps pump blood
throughout his body. Doctors hope to wean him off the device slowly.

Is this the reason why God forbade the eating of pigs? - that they are
genetically so close to humans that eating them would be akin to
cannibalism? Of course, it's not a perfect match and there was gene
editing involved to lessen the chance of rejection - but perhaps more
human hearts would be available if we could gene edit the humans, but of
course that would not be ethically acceptable.

It will be interesting to see whether this experiment succeeds.
