Anyone stayed in Amsterdam or Soest yhs? Any comments?
Are they good for children?
We are thinking of spending Xmas that way.

I have stayed in the hostel near the station. I found the dorms very
cramped and it was a noisy hostel. I personally wouldn't have taken
children there unless there were family rooms. If they do family rooms
then it is very convenient for the centre.
I have heard, from other hostellers, many good reports about the
hostel that begins with V ( is it Voellspark or some similar name)

That's the one we were thinking about - Vondelpark.
I've also already heard poor reports about t'other.

My recommendation is Haarlem - it's about 30-40min train journey from
Amsterdam (if memory serves) and you can catch either a bus direct to the
YH or a train to a station that's a short, pleasant, canal-side walk from
it. We (me, SWMBO and four offspring) stayed there in 1999 and it was a
very nice time. The hostel's modern built, well equipped and has a
number of smaller rooms you could book as a family room.
Oh, and Haarlem itself if a very nice little town, too :-)

Very many thanks.
And also to all others who responded.
I had booked Haarlem (also me my SWMBO and also four sprogs) the day
before you posted this :-)
We have decided to have an extended Christmas in Holland, first having a
few of nights in Amsterdam at the Vondelpark yh before moving on to
Soest for their Christmas events.
It will then be back to Haarlem for a couple of wind-down nights.
We have 6-bed family rooms throughout.
Flights are all booked, and bags nearly packed (OK I exagerate the latter).
Can't wait.
