I'll be visiting London in May. I would like recommendations as to
the best hostel in London. Also, do I need to book in advance?

There are seven YHA Hostels in London and to be sure of a bed it's best to book in
advance.
There is a central booking office for these hostels at:

Central Booking Office,
Rotherhithe Youth Hostel,
Salter Road,
Rotherhithe,
London SE16 1PP

Telephone 0171 248 6547
Fax 0171 236 7681
(you'll need to put your international dialling code in there)
City of London (19.75), and Rotherhithe (19.75) hostels are the most central and
hence the most expensive, Hampstead Heath (14.40) and Highgate Village (12.25) the
furthest out and the cheapest. The prices are per adult per night.

I only know Earl's Court and Holland House, and I can recommend both.
They are very well equipped, clean, nice staff etc.

Earl's Court has the advantage of being very close to the underground
station of the same name, whereas Holland House is quietly situated in
small park.
