For those who have waited...

I've been orf sick with a stinker of a cold, now nursing SWMBO, who has
caught it off me. So today, I took the trouble to unwire the Video and cart
it to the study and capture No.1 with ShowShifter.

Upload is in progress to AstraWeb, so you may have to wait a while for
propagation.
At present (22:11 on Thurs 16th) the 30 RARs are done, and the PARs just
started

Still trying to get a better quality version - you can tell there's a slight
quality loss (well, VHS tape is half bandwidth to start!). Steve Wood sent
me a DVDRW, but it seems to be a non standard format from his DVD
recorder/player, so still exploring that avenue.

I plan to try to authorize them into (I expect 2) standard DVD video format.
Maybe we can then send a set round for the non-downloaders out there, or
maybe I make more sets and charge for materials.

As usual a NZB to FUBC when I see the files on the server.

You leave out the crucial plus or minus (DVD-RW or DVD+RW)! Perhaps that's
your problem with Steve's disk?

Thanks yet again Ron. Perfectly watchable.

No. IIRC DVD+RW, but I've a multi format DVD writer, Steve's disk was
written from the outside inwards, which surprised me, and the drive said the
disk was 100% empty (probably because the centre was not written to!)

Could these programs be sent using Yousendit. A free program.
See http://beta.yousendit.com/static.php?key=tos
You can send up to a one Gig file.
I haven't tried it yet so I don't know it's problems if any.

The free service is only 100KB. ISTR looking at this before.

Just been playing with Ulead Movie Factory for making a standard DVD.
Put all 6 episodes in (twice - "before adds" and "after adds") and this gave
a result of
5.8GB and lasts 2h 15m 17s
I know that's going to take >10h to convert to DVD format, so that will be
later tonight!
Hopefully DVD shrink will force that into 1 single DVD.

Also trying a free ftp server program, that might allow a (small) number of
users to get the data firsthand from the PC.
Trouble is I can't test the connection until I try on another PC......
(probably when I go to work on Monday)

If anyone wants to try...
ftp://canal:ca...@81.178.220.238:2121/
(or...
IP:81.178.220.238
Port:2121 (I changed from the default of 21, as the ISP might block that
one)
User:canal
password:canal)

and see if they can see the test.txt, feel free - odds are I haven't set up
the router correctly to pass, but who knows...

If anyone wishes to try it I have put a 45 Mb file at
http://download.yousendit.com/45DED4DFF059D70E
They say that 25 people can download it before it is cleared in 7 days.
It is a history of of the deisel engine.
Let me know if it works OK please.

Thanks. But I don't know why (yet).... Not an expert in this file sharing
lark...
I've opened the port in the router, and in the (software) firewall, must be
missing something...
Need to read up more...

Waaah. I now find out that Granada have made more that I thought
(originally the tv web site showed 6 episodes - now it mentions 10!), so no
point cramming 6 in one DVD (unless it goes to 12! - it doesn't actually say
how many there are in total....)

Well I got the file OK, but an mp4! what to play it with? Last time I had
an mp4, the only way to play it was to install the "Matroska Pack" (and play
with Windows Player), but that codec pack then takes over for *all* movies,
and I found the sound was always anoying slightly out of sync for all other
movies.

Hi Ron, Quick time plays it OK.
This B&W program has a lot of very early movies of the engineering power industry.

So it does. Hadn't installed QT since the last re-install (not that many
movies use it)

I tried with both Firefox and WS-FTP and they both returned "Connection

Hi Ron,

I'd just like to say 'thank you'. I'm located in the Netherlands, and
there is no way that I would have been able to watch this series
otherwise.
I would have preferred a show that concentrated more on canal features,
but it's nice to see at least something about canals on the telly.

There are now 6 "Locks and Quays" on http://www.ronjones.org.uk

No program last week (double Emmerdale!!!) No.7 is to be transmitted this
Thursday @ 7:30

I also note that
http://www.itvregions.com/Granada/Factsheets/Locks+and+Quays.htm
