We've been very happy with overnight moorings at Castlefield, once right in
the centre of things, which was fine as long as we didn't mind the tourists
watching our barbecue. On another occasion we found a pleasant mooring in
one of the side basins.
Further out of Manchester, we have fond memories of a very pleasant
overnight welcome at the Watch House Cruising Club (somewhere near Lymm,
IIRC).

I was told that MSCC control it, is this true?, what are the licence costs
and average mooring costs?
Thanks
Steve
We have never had yob trouble on the Bridgewater!
The nearest we have ever moored to Manchester (apart from Castlefields) was
by Bridge 36, for the Bridge Inn.
At Castlefields we always tend to moor in the Northern Basins - Kenworthy
Arm, simply because more people tend to moor there! (safety in numbers
theory!)

Yup,in MSCC control,licence about £250 p.a.,moorings for a 20 footer
in Warrington around £400/pa(if you can find one!)
Mike
We have safely moored at Castlefields but would recommend that moorings on
the left as you approach the Rochdale canal.
Worsley is fine as well. Lousy beer but a good Chinese takeaway!

I was born by Caesarian section...but not so you'd notice. It's just
that when I leave a house, I go out through the window.
Ouch, thats a big licence fee for a 30 mile waterway, the broads licence is
£70 p.a for my boat for over 200 miles of waterway. oh well!
URL should be http://www.catshill.com/trips/bridge.htm I think.
Chris
Don't forget if you have a Bridgewater licence, you can also go on all
the BW controlled canals/rivers as well, without paying their fee.
Mike
Well, not quite - as far as Blackburn or Burscough north on the L&L, as
far as Barr Bridge on the Shroppie, and Harecastle on the T&M - and only
for seven days in each direction. I don't know whether anything has been
negotiated re. the Rochdale Nine etc now that BW control them.
Still - if it's your first season afloat, the limits give you a fair
cruising area - you can get a fortnight in going from one extremity to
the other. We did when we started.

Cross country skiing is great if you live in a small country.

We wish! When we were on the Bridgewater, our 'free' cruising range
permitted us to travel from Preston Brook to Barbridge Junction, but NOT
onto the Shroppie itself, to the entrance of the Harecastle Tunnel, but not
onto the Macc. We also could travel past Leigh to Burscough or up to the
bottom of the Blackburn locks.
We always ended up buying two months of license for summer cruising, at $95
per month.
Now that we're on the Rochdale, our RCT license has no reciprocal agreement
with BW, so we can't go past Sowerby Bridge without paying.

How do BW know that your 7 days are up?I can't believe they log every
boat. What's to stop you saying *only been out 6 days*if asked?
Mike
I'm not sure what the system south of Preston Brook is - we were never
logged that I know of - but that doesn't mean that we weren't. Going
north you have no alternative but to stop at Plank Lane lift bridge, and
the operator there takes your details.
The reciprocal arrangement for BW-licensed boats allows them to traverse
the Bridgewater between the BW waterways - but I don't know how the
MSCCo polices this.
A couple of years ago we used the reciprocal agreement up the K&A, with
Hendrika, which is licensed for the Thames. We tried desperately to tell
somebody that we were using the agreement, just so that BW new that it was a
good idea, but could we find anybody?
We were never spotted anywhere between Reading and Aldermaston.
Paul Jerome
No. Too busy chipping icicles off lock gates.
