From what I remember of the Belgrave lock area I wouldn't fancy spending
a night there, though I don't know about the marina there.

The only safe overnight moorings in Leicester are on a pontoon by Castle
Park just south of West Bridge. Access is via a gate (which is locked
with a BW padlock) from the park. The park itself is also locked at
night and one of the gates has a BW padlock.

South of Leicester the last safe moorings are at Kilby Bridge where
there are 14 day and 48hr moorings. Parking alongside the road is
possible.

The only trouble I had was at South Wigston, where on a Bank Holiday
some local youths had got hold of a windlass and due the fact that one
of the anti-vandal locks was not working they caused me some delay.

You should be able to get a place on the pontoon as it is fairly long, but if
you do, don't more under the foot bridge, as I have heard reports of people
having things (or people!) being dropped of the bridge on to them.

The marina that was between Birstal and Belgrave now appears to be derelict with
no signs of boats or people last time I went past (2 weeks ago).

Good mooring are also available at Thurmaston and Birstal, boith with good shops
and regular buses into town (Leicester) from both villages.

Hope you have a good trip,
Andy

We wanted to moor there last year, but Crystal, the Foxton locky
un-officially warned us off. This was as yobs jump down from stupid new foot
bridge, that crosses over the pontoon. Seeing as we will be coming past here
again next year, has any one had any bad experiences here? There must be
some serious curry houses in Leicester. We stopped short at Kilby and went to
the slightly suspect Navigation pub

I would not moor in Leicester, period. When we were returning to Nottingham
via the Leicester line 3 weeks ago, we stopped at Kilby Bridge, we moored
next to a boat that had moored at the Castle Park pontoon overnight. The
gates may be padlocked but that didn't stop the vandals throwing rocks from
the bank opposite and taking out one of their windows. Consequently, we left
Kilby at 04:30 the next morning and had a most pleasant and trouble free
passage through Leicester.....

It's a shame really as the Leicester line is an absolute delight - with the
single exception of Leicester itself.

We had no problems mooring outside the County Arms in Blaby followed by
the pub moorings at Syston but the most interesting mooring we tried was
in the boating lake(ish) inside Abbey Park itself. We didn't have the
nerve to stay overnight given the dirty looks we got from the park wardens
but it was a perfect place to meet the kids (and grandchildren) and
appears to be an official mooring. (didn't 'alf stir some muck up on the
way out!)

We went through last month --- didn't like the suggestred secure moorings near Lime Kiln Lock but it was getting late so continued and moored up near the liesure centre / sports site car park just on the towing path . we were the only boat and it wasn't the week end

but the council etc have created a new cycleway ( seperate from but intervisible with, the towpath for much of the time and in my book the reputation is undeserved.
