Can anyone please help me with finding a supplier of workshop manulas for
marinised BMC 1.5 litre diesel engines ?

Also, are their any specialist UK suppliers of recon and new parts for them
?

Thanks for any help

Try Calcutt Boats (01926 813757 / bo...@calcutt.demon.co.uk)

or AMC Diesel (01772 613003 / sa...@amcdiesel.co.uk)

Both very helpful in my experience, can supply spares and marinising
bits and manuals.

Yes, AMC actually import new "BMC" 1.5 and 1.8 diesels from India, where
they are still made.

I believe that it is only the 1.5 made in India. The 1.8 is made in
Turkey, that is where Calcutt source their new units from and where (I
am told) all BL's tooling went. The Turkish 1.8 is quite a good engine
and has had several design mods to improve it on the old UK made
engine. I have heard that the Indian 1.5 has not got such a good
quality of build, but I must stress that that is hearsay only.
Roger.

Thanks for the information chaps...

Be gentle with me if I'm being thick here, but the AMC Diesel site refers to
Thornycroft, and the pictures are quite different to my engine (which for
instance has a Bowman heat exchanger). Are the 'marinising parts' the main
area where the new manufacturers have changed things ?

I guess I'll have to try a few 'wanted' ads in the boat mags to see if
anyone has an original manual...

Thanks again for the replies

They definitely do BMC bits as well as Thorneycroft. If you want an
exact replacement for a particular oddity (I think marinising bits fall
into this category) you'd better discuss it with them. They are helpful
on the 'phone.

I can only speak with any in depth knowledge of the Calcutt 1.8's.
They are imported in base engine form from Turkey (albeit in a build
specified by Roger Preen of Calcutt) and are marinised at Calcutt. I
would be amazed if the Indian engines were done in any different way.
So the individual items that comprise the marinisation
parts/location/fittings etc are down to the firm/person that does the
marinisation, hence the numerous versions that can be seen in use. As
the various marinising companies have waxed and waned (or come and
gone in some cases)the parts that have been used will have changed.

A little while ago I needed to get some new parts for the Bowman heat
exchanger on my BMC 1.5. I looked up the name in a directory and phoned the
manufacturers. They were able to identify the heat exchanger on the phone
and sent me a new core (it wasn't cheap!). The only contact info I can find
in my files is the old phone number, which was 021-359-5401.

The other source of parts I have used for the heat changer is Lansing
Marine, who supplied new seals (although sadly this did not solve my
problem - hence the new core).

I would also agree that AMC Diesel is a useful source of spares for the
engine. They seem to know their stuff and send items out very quickly.

I do have an old manual for the engine, dating from the early 70s. It is
actually a car engine manual, so does not include any marinisation bits.

Early 1.5s had a Bowman heat exchanger mounted above the water pump,
across the front of the engine. Later ones fitted the heat exchanger
inside the exhaust manifold. I see no reason why the later manifold
and some pipe modification would not be a perfect fit. You might have
to invert the inlet manifold though.

ASAP Supplies sell parts for BMC and the workshop manual. They do mail order
and have a web site at www.asap-supplies.com
