Communication on the above group seems to be causing problems( the word
shambles springs to mind !)
Anybody here got the system sussed who can help me ?
I cannot get the system to work on either the old or new systems, so I am
unable to seek assistance within the "list " itself.

Works fine for just about everyone else.
Now how can I help?
Did you unsubscribe from the list?
If not send a message to canals-li...@yahoogroups.com
This must be sent from the email address that you use for the list and not
some made up one it will reset your subscription to single messages.
Then delete the newsgroup.

If all else fails send a blank message to
canals-lis...@yahoogroups.com
from the address that you wish to use for the list and this will subscribe
you again.
It will take a day or so as George needs to approve the subscription.

I would hardly call it a shambles two people have had problems and one of
those was the fact that his news reader deals with things in a strange
way...

Can you login via the web interface (assuming you have a Yahoo Groups
username??!)
I know from bitter experience that Yahoo is *not* kind to bouncers, even
after sending a re-validation e-mail, it stll refused to unblock my e-mail
address - ended up changing the e-mail address (in the web interface), as it
was the only way to get it working again - thankfully I've more than one
e-mail alias.

I used to access Canals via newsgroup in the days of the combined
URW/Canals arrangement. When Canals separated, newsgroup access to it
became impossible.

Does anyone know whether it is possible now? It is so much more
convenient (to me) than an email subscription. I access URW as a
newsgroup.

The list can now be accessed in 'newsgroup fashion', although not truly
a newsgroup. This has only recently been arranged.

News server name: news.gmane.org
Group name: gmane.recreation.canals

You will need to subscribe or already be subscribed to the canals-list
but once you are receiving and posting via the 'newsgroup', you can set
your email delivery to 'nomail'.

I don't belong to the canals list.

I have just quickly read http://gmane.org/post.php (probably missed
something vital). It doesn't seem to suggest that I need to be a subscriber
to any mail list itself. Although there is a slight hoop to jump through
with any gmane group to which you decide to post.

Have I missed something?

Ah! I guess it is set up as "Non-Public"

Posting allowed (default)
Read-only (for announcement lists, CVS logs etc.)
Non-public (posting through Gmane allowed for list members)
Unidirectional (no posting allowed through Gmane)

I see from your second post that you have worked it out for yourself. A
non-member can join the list by sending a blank email to:
canals-lis...@yahoogroups.com

Having used the server name and group name (above) to set up 'newsgroup'
access, the list emails can then be switched off by sending a blank
email to canals-list-nomail@yahoogroups,com

I'm now awaiting George's approval.

With fears of rekindling the memorable Dral/Mabbett flame wars of 1998 I
wonder if George has considered all the implications of the list settings
since the introduction of the nntp interface.

As a member of the public I am banned from looking at anything but the front
page at YahooGroups (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/canals-list/) but via my
newsreader I can see the full bodies of all messages posted since the nntp
gateway was opened. He may as well open the messages to non-members.

Suddenly something in the corner of the dungeon causes the inmate to
twitch. With a jump he awakes - he thought he heard a familiar voice
call his name. The seemingly old, decepit man in the dark, cold,
dungeon tries to recall - vague images enter and leave his brain.
Something from a long, long time ago... Boats on still waters...
Mabbett... ?Peckett... ? Someone named George... ? And something to do
with a black sheep! The sheep is slaughtered, a new leader is named,
self proclaimed, a Tyrant! The people are split, the civil war begins,
people are lost... gone forever....

Unable to make head or tail of it all the man gives up, turns over and
falls back to sleep.
