Following on from the thread about Leeds I'm wondering what the Ashton is
like these days, as I'm trying to plan a clockwise cruise around the
Cheshire ring, having last done it about 10 years ago the other way around.

CART's Boaters' Guides still recommend starting passage through Ashton locks
before 10am. Would we be well advised to avoid, say, a Sunday afternoon?

We usually prefer to moor overnight in quiet rural areas, but that's a bit
tricky through Manchester. Last time we moored at Portland Basin, as
advised, but the staff at the museum didn't seem used to visiting boats
wanting to moor there overnight and nor was there very much space.

Is there anywhere suitable to moor overnight near Ducie Street Junction?
Greg Chapman's old Waterways Guides Updates site mentioned a secure mooring
pontoon there. Is it still there? A similar pontoon in Birmingham which we
used a few years ago near Aston Junction had gone when we went back more
recently. I've seen mention of boats mooring up overnight below lock 83 on
the Rochdale or somewhere near Piccadilly Village, but I can't see anywhere
obvious either on a map or in satellite photographs.

What's the Runcorn arm like? I'd like to visit, but given our timings we're
likely to end up there overnight. Are there any decent visitor moorings? I'm
really struggling to find any information online and a 10 year old Nicholson
and the Boaters' Guides are both lacking in detail.

Thanks for any advice,

Roger

We moored overnight below Portland Basin on the Macc - a bit of parkland,
quiet and no problems in April.
