Finally found the type of n/b that I'm after, organising a survey, and
currently sorting out the financials: rather than getting a straight
loan, I like the idea of a Marine Mortgage - does anyone have a view on
these? The interest rates seem better, but rather a lot more red tape
than a straight loan. Any links to companies that provide them would be
much appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
Neil
I understand the boat has to be registered (as a british ship), unless
this has been amended to take account of the the DVLC boat register.
This requires a surveyor, indellible marking with number and tonnage,
and expense, although bar room comment has it that casting a
registered (narrowboat) ship adrift is rather more serious that
casting a narrow boat adrift, but I can not see the local constabulary
taking much account of it.
There may also be a problem for future purchasers in changing the
name.
I am sure you will get a lot of other replys, but you might get more
advice (do not mention the nb) on uk.rec.sailing.

have you thought of borrowing abroad? Interest rates are several percent
lower than in UK.
You do have the risk that the pound might suddenly plummet to it's real
value, but otherwise you get a much better deal.
Hi Neil

Hope it is of use.

Certainly true in the Netherlands. Barge mortgages there are similar
to house ones (same interest rates, same conditions), and available as
a matter of course. But the ship must be registered (in the
Netherlands), and you *do* have to consider the currency risk.
