Hi,

I am interested in buying a boat that has been fitted out by the owner . The
hull was built five years ago and the boat fitted out on dry land before
being launched a year later.
Should I be buying it with a certificate and manuals or , as the owner
tells me, these are not required as the boat is five years old ?

Thanks in anticipation.

Chris

Steve,

See http://www.ceproof.com/recreational_craft_directive_RCD.htm

I would also want a full survey including ultrasonic hull thickness
testing (get the bottom and a brand new Boat Safety Certificate see
http://www.boatsafetyscheme.com/site/Home_1.asp
for details.

Technically the five years starts once the boat has been "put to use" which
in this case, as I understand you, would have been four years ago. If that
is the case then the boat can only be sold if it fully complies with the
RCD.

Take a look at http://users.skynet.be/sky34301/cert.html for further
information under the section on DIY craft. Also, take note of notes 1 and
2!

HTH.

And I think CE marking comes into the equation inaddation to the manual
and the declaration, which in this case should probably be an Annex 3a
which is alongs the lines of "sold for completion by another party"

Michael, please correct me if I am wrong.

There is advice also available from the British Marine Federation, the
Royal Yachting Association and Hampshire Trading Standards websites

and here's another useful link

As you say, the hull manufacturer should supply the owners manual and
declaration. However, I believe the CE mark can only be affixed on
completion of the craft.
