Does anyone have any AutoCAD or DXF files of various boat layouts I could
have to experiment with different designs?

We;re thinking of buying a second hand boat in the spring and want to do a
bit of planning for the re-fit.

Cheers

I have a layout in Visio 5.0 format. Visio can't save a file as
AutoCAD or DXF but I think AutoCAD can read a Visio file?

I have done all my drawing work using AutoSketch this should be readable by
AutoCAD. You are welcome to a copy. My boats a 57ft Trad. Now converted into
semi trad. Mid ships engine moved to under new rear deck.
Drop me a line and I will e-mail the files.

Thanks both of you, I will get in touch direct.

Perhaps if I manage to slim the drawings down so that they can be used as a
generic narrowboat template I will post them on a website in various
formats.

Would it be possible to let me have a copy of this?

If you could send it to edwin....@natwest.com it would be appreciated.

Mike sent me a WMF version of the drawing, and I've managed to load it into
AutoCad if this is what you are after- looks like a pretty accurate survey
of a boat.

To save my phone bill I've put the Visio file and dimensions stencil
on the 'resources' page on my web site, so feel free to download it
from there...

There's also a GIF version on the site, but you can't do much with it.

Visio would be ideal for me - I'll download it from Mike's site as he
suggests.

Many thanks anyway :-)

The OP dates back to 2001. I doubt they're still around. Also not a good
idea to put your email in a post, you will probably receive a lot of
spam now...

I don't think that's true any more, if it ever was. I've put my
E-Mail in Usenet posts many times over the years and it's a real
E-Mail address in the From: line of the headers. I see very little
junk mail which can be directly attributed to these.

Many moons ago, spammers used to harvest e-mail addresses from usenet
posts, as well as posting spam in group.

Now, it's not worth the effort, and they harvest social media ID's instead.

I've been posting using a real, working e-mail address for 30 or more
years now with no noticeable problems. Most spam has come due to my
address being on hacked e-mail accounts (Not mine)

I have been posting to usenet since the 1980s - Yes before
the grifters arrived.

I don't have much of a spam problem, but I do run
spamassassin set to terminate with extreme prejudice.

I can tell you from years of dealing with the spam
tsunami that spammers really don't care as it costs them nothing
to send out spam. I get spam constantly sent to my domain with
every imaginable name, they guess and hope there really is a

Depends on who manages your email account. Google (both GMail as well as private
domains that have Google run their email) has quite effective spam filtering
these days. I never see false negatives and scanning the Spam folder, maybe one
or two false positives a month, if that.

I 'manage my E-Mail account', mail is delivered directly to my home
desktop machine which runs a mail server. The mail server puts the
mail in my mail spool. No POP3 or IMAP involved.

I have been on Usenet (and E-Mail) since, er um, a very long time ago.
I worked at BT Martlesham ('research centre' as it was then) from the
late 1980s for many, many years. Nigel Titley of BT was a pioneer of
E-Mail and so we got to use it from very early days.

One does get quite a lot of junk mail with silly names sent to any
mail domain. What I do is accept mail to my 'proper' E-Mail names and
run a filter on the junk for names that *might* be me, i.e. I search
for 'chris' within the name part of the E-Mail.

That's handy if you have a fixed IP address, or a server which can
forward all traffic, which very few of us do.

I lease space on a mail swerver, and have a reasonable amount of control
over what arrives here.

And nothing like SpamAssassin? I wonder if the spam generators have moved on
from email to mobile ads?

Single payment of £5 to PlusNet and you can have a fixed IP (at least
you could when I did it, not so many years ago).

Dunno if that would work for me, as I use at least two different
networks ( At the moment, 3, Vodafone and a new Beattie 4G one) to
connect, and all of them are intermittent. I just got rid of the
landline, as I'm planning to be moving home a few times this year.
