Back to the Fens

Having moved to the Peterborough area, I thought that it might be a good
idea to move my boat onto the Fens for a while (if not longer).

Judging, however, from the activity on this group there is not as much going
on as there used to be (back in the 80s). In fact I have read that certain
aspects are actually falling into disrepair; the cut at Ramsey for
instance.

I appreciate a newsgroup is not the best place to draw a conclusion but it
does act as a barometer. So, what is the feeling out there? In the 80s we
thought the time was coming and investment would be made - was that
investment made and what for the 21st century?

Have recently moved into Nordelph and moved Daizy V from the Basingstoke
canal to Well Creek. Looking at the time it takes to lock a boat through
Salters Lode and the problems with The Old Bedford river it is not very
promising for the 2007 IWA festival on the River Great Ouse

Ah Well Creek, I know it well - moored at Upwell for a bit (or was it
Outwell) many moons ago.

How are you finding the Fens? I've never cruised the Basi but I understand
it's pretty cool. From what I remember of the Fens, we used to keep the
boat at Fox's Marina in March, they certainly lack the interest of the
Canals and facilities were - well what facilities :-)

We recently took a boat out for a week-end from Fox's and really,
really enjoyed it. The Middle Levels were a revelation and the
quietness was exactly what we were looking for.

Proximity to East Anglia (where I live) for starters! :-)

As I see it they are just a part of 'the canals' aren't they? They
are even connected so are not separate like the broads.

them :-). They are navigable (sometimes and in parts) drains that can get
weeded up and have very little in the way of facilities.

You can lose yourself in those things, but then that is the charm. No
overcrowded boating. You can still find places easily where you can tie up
all day and not see another boat.

I didn't mean that they were run by BW of course, just that they are
part of the 'network' as seen by a leisure user.
