If your thinking of buying one, DO NOT purchase one from a shop which
specialises in walking / camping etc. (no names mentioned) the prices are
much higher then those found in a Yacht Chandler or similar.

Buy a copy of Sailing Today or a similar publication and you will see that
you can save your self £50 or more for the same handheld item.

Cheers

Dedicated walking shops (like Outdoors & that one in Fort William) are
always expensive, compared to the say bought from mail-order or
non-specialist shops.

Maplins used to be one of the best buys.

Or probably better still try going down the Tottenham Court Road in London,
almost always the cheapest place for electronic gear - and you can sometimes
bargain the proices down further too.

Any particular shops in mind. I may be in London next Tuesday (for
the first time in nearly 20 years) but will not have much time to spare.

Got one last year from Sunrise Business Centre. They had a wide range
but do not put price tags on them!

I went prepared and quoted them a "price I had seen mail order" £10
lower than the real figure and they matched it when I said I was going
to browse in a few more shops nearby.

If I were you I would research which model / accessories you would like
and figure out the price you want to pay before you go.

Hi ,
I don't know what price you paid last year, but I was shocked at the
price Tiso were asking for a GPS12 (£150).Try
http://www.21store.com/21store/cgi-bin/printpage.pl?user=unknown&fname=gpsz.
txt&doctype=gpsz who sell them at
£119 . If you try your local Yacht Chandler I,m sure they would match
this.

As a matter of interest I have just picked up the June issue of Trail
magazine complete with Ellis Brigham catalogue. They are offering the
Magellan GPS 300 at 115 UK pounds and the Blazer 12 at 130 UK pounds. Also
several other models up to 220 UK pounds. It may be worth a look.

This may be simply a matter of personal preference, but Garmin products
*seem* to be rated higher than Magellan (judging largely by the Garmin
following on sci.geo.satellite-nav). AFAIK the GPS12 has more features
than the Magellan Blazer12 & the former is £99.99 from Mailspeed Marine
(I just happened to glance at a copy of 'Sail-Faster Monthly' or some
such publication whilst in WH Smiths last week.)
Personally, I plan to get a GPS sometime soon - I'd get a Garmin GPS12,
from a Chandlers & expect to spend £100 tops.
If anyone is considering buying a GPS I'd check out
http://www.joe.mehaffey.com. I've also looked into buying one from the
US & due to VAT plus import duty (totalling 22%) it seemed uneconomic.
If anyone has found otherwise, I'd be very interested in hearing about
it....

Indeed. Couple of friends have them, and both recommended to me that if
I were to follow suit then the ads in sailing and avaitaion mags were
the place to get the bargains.

I lookied into importing from the states but there are problems with
warantee issues and using the supplier below the saving was so small it was
not worth it. Its frightening the amount of difference in the price of these
units.

Nautical World 01702 444444 where I got my unit were knocking them ( Garmin
GPS12) out at £94.99 plus £4.99 P&P. (Includes VAT) a couple of months ago.

I've no connection with them except I've bought a couple of things off them
with no problems, never seen GPS cheaper anywhere else and it saves all that
shoe leather on the tottenham court road - as always use a credit card for
additional protection. - note you need to spend over £100 for this so buy
the data cable too.

Hope that helps (Do I get a percentage of the saving?) :-)
