Gear reviews of men's waterproof walking trousers?

Call them what you like (rain pants, over trousers, waterproof trousers)
but waterproof trousers seem to be the poor relation when it comes to
gear reviews. I know people (including me) would rather not wear them,
but they don't seem to get much coverage in the magazines (although
there have been a few about women's trousers recently)

Thanks goodness for the tgo annual gear index (makes searching a bit
easier).

Would anyone who has the electronic version of tgo care to do a quick
search? Ta

I've been through the last two years of back issues of tgo & Trail and
found:
trail (Feb 08) Midprice waterproof trousers
tgo (Oct 2006)
but not much else.

Any material gratefully rec'd (I have back issues of tgo & trail for
about 3 years); other sources also gladly received.

TIA

What gear reviews can't tell you is much about the specific fit. That's
more important with trews than jackets because they'll potentially
affect your stride, especially as they're typically something on top of
what you normally wear.

So rather than read reviews I'd personally say it's more useful to go
and try them out. At the end of the day, one pair of Goretex Pro-Shell
(or whatever) trousers will perform fairly like another in terms of
material properties, but if one is too tight around the hips and the
legs too long for you then (a) you won't find that in a review and (b)
it'll make them useless.

Another thing you can ascertain in person is how easy (or otherwise) a
given pair is to get on over boots. It's all very well a reviewer
saying he finds it easy, but if it turns out you take a boot 3 sizes
bigger that may not be the case for you...

Pete.

Slioch appear to have evaporated, and firemore (which is where you wind
up) only seem to have jackets?!

You need to look a bit closer. Slioch have ceased trading, but there is
a not-entirely-unrelated company popped up in their place called
Firemore. One clear difference between Firemore and its predecessor is
they don't do Goretex any more. Another is they don't seem to be in the
trousers market...

Very important point, this. Paramo's Viento looked ideal but aren't made
any more and don't seem to have a direct replacement.
I've a pair of shower/wind resistant trousers that are very light so the
'shorts' part isn't too bad left on and the legs can be tucked in to ankle
gaiters.

[snip]

That's exactly what I had in mind and why I'm trotting off for a tour of
the gear shops on Sunday. I was looking for some bed-time reading
beforehand :-)

I've always felt guilty at using a £15 pair of Regatta's even for the
wildest days. They're light, almost waterproof, easy to walk in and can take
abuse.

Some day I'll spend a few pounds more and buy Gore-tex, but for the sake of
me, I can't think why at the moment.

Thanks for the info Peter - I shall have to stop recommending Slioch .
