I needed some new ones and recently saw Hawkshead's offer in the Radio
Times - seemed like a damn good deal. They were very comfortable actually
but the sole split quite quickly on moderate ground (Cotswold Way). Is this
just bad luck or should I get the cash refunded and use another
manufacturer?

>You should certainly get your money back, or accept a replacement pair. If
these prove OK, you were unlucky first time. If they also do not last, get
your money back and try elsewhere. In general the cost of boots does reflect
the quality of components and manufacture. Whereas eg a fleece or shirt may
have a large amount of 'style' and image included.
Personally, I need good protection for my feet and will invest to enjoy my
walking. Few clothing items really need to be pricy, though they can help
the feel-good factor! Can I also suggest that boots do need to be tried on
properly and are not the best item to get mail order.

I bought a Hawkshead coat a while ago & about a week later the zip failed.
They were fine about replacing it in the shop (in Sheffield) - I'd take the
boots back.
I'd be very interested to know what happens with your boots - I've wondered
about getting some, but wasn't sure how durable they'd be.
Do let me know what happens (if you get a minute).

I have found mine (also via the Radio Times) to be both comfortable and
resilient, and remain so a few months of wear. On the basis of what you
say, there is a case for a refund- I suggest that you speak to their
customer relations people to start with; I anticipate that you will get
a helpful response.
