It is hoped that funding can be found to open 4 tunnels on the monsal
trail that have been closed ever since beechings axe fell on the line
in the 60's

There is one view which will particularily be opened as currently only
300 people a year enjoy on a very over subscribed guided tour.

What do you all think? Is it good news for the area considering the
monsal trail is currently a honey pot especially at monsal head?

I agree that Monsal Head gets stacked out on a nice day but
the trail in general is there to be walked on. Long may it remain so.

Is it likely that it will become saturated with cyclists in summer, just
as the Tissington and High Peak Trails often are?
Very few of them seem to have bells or bother to warn walkers of their
approach.

I personally find disused railway track trails boring, but they can be a
relief from boggy ground in winter. One Sunday there were a
series of snowmen dotted along the Tissington Trail...

Yes, I try to avoid cycling on the trails at weekends (haven't been there
for several years) - and I do have a bell (even had one on my
time-trialler!)
Walkers don't need warning: when I walk on such a trail, I walk along one
side and look round before changing line - I once nearly collided with a
runner when I moved across a twin-track FP to avoid a 'puddle' and he was
going at >2x my speed (he didn't have a bell either!). As for the peds. -
well, they're a damned nuisance when I'm walking, They're about as much
under control as a frightened horse!

I did the track twixt Northampton and Market Harborough - needed some
serious therapy in Wetherspoons after that! Towpaths are just as bad but
have more items of interest around.

Above Great Longstone the trail does not lend itself to bikes, thankfully,
and inasmuch as significant parts of the trail do not actually follow the
old track bed but go off on ordinary footpaths following its length on a
bike is not possible, legally.

Very interesting. I wonder what measures they're taking to make
it safe, which is the reason given for closing the tunnels in the first
place. There's one or two I would have thought were not candidates
simply because they curve. The two Cressbrook tunnels in particular.
There's at least one already open, a short straight stretch in Chee Dale,
but if they're going to try and open the other straight stretches then
good luck to them....although if reopening some of the tunnels is a
precursor to reopening the line in full then they may get some opposition.
