Does anyone know of a UK (on-line) stockist of Platypus bite values? I
lost mine on a walk a while ago - the end of the tube got trapped in a
rather highly sprung kissing gate - and I can't seem to find anywhere
that sells them. None of the big outdoor stores in the ELD stock them,
e.g. Gaynors, Fishers, F&T, etc.

The newer models have a yellow and green "hyperflow" bite valve, which
are available from the manufacturer at
http://www.cascadedesigns.com/platypus/accessories.asp

However, I don't want to have to pay £10+ postage from the US for
something that only costs a few quid. Also, I don't want to have to buy
a whole new hose and attachments (again for £10+). Do the Camelbak bite
valves fit Platypus Hosers as I've seen these in some shops?

As I mentioned above, the manufacturer (Cascade Designs, I think) sells
them separately, so someone somewhere in this country must also sell
them.

We picked up a couple in Ambleside last week - from the climbing shop next
to the pizza parlour ( Dodds ? ) - can't remember the name of the shop, but
i'm sure someone here will . . . . . .
Barn End shop in Wasdale sells them too.
I asked in Gaynors and was told that they do sell them, but they'd run out -
so it may be an idea to try them again in a week or so.
I buggered two of the blighters up by boiling them, thinking that I'd give
them a good clean - when I re-fitted them they began to drip . . . . . . . .
:-(

You mean The Climbers' Shop? I'm sure I checked in there...

Cheers, Steve. I'll have to look more carefully next time I'm up there.

Try Stephen at www.NeedleSports.com I know they stock platypus stuff but
don't know about replacement bits and pieces.

Yep - thats the place. they were on the wall opposite the counter, in with
all the bits and pieces. I never spotted them, Rachel picked something up to
look at it ( could have been a complete bite valve & tube assembly ) and
they were hidden behind it . . . . . . . . .
I've seen the new design (green and yellow ?) ones in Trail magazine, but
haven't come across them in the shops yet - they look far superior to the
purple ones. Only trouble with a higher flow rate is that I'll be running
out of water sooner . . . . . . . . . . . .

I am sure that I picked up one of these in Oban or Fort William for a couple
of quid. I lost mine and had to use one of the permanent fix caps on the
bottle, but then I found one separately and was so overjoyed that I forgot
that I had since relocated the one I thought I had lost.

By the way Paul, have you seen the little black fabric bite valve covers
that Platypus do ? They're worth their weight in gold, I was forever
cleaning a filthy bite valve - every time I took my rucksack off and laid it
on the ground the bite valve would find sheep s**t . . . . . . . . .
They do a good job of stopping the tube from flapping around ( possibly into
gates ! ) too.

I hadn't seen them until I checked out the Cascade Designs website
today. They look pretty handy but if the bite valves themselves are
hard to find, it doesn't say much for the chances of locating somewhere
that sells the covers! :-)

Like I said - they're worth their weight in gold. We picked ours up at the
Barn Door, Wasdale. £7 each IIRC.
Thinking about it - If I'd had one of these in the first place I wouldn't
have ruined my original bite valve - I boiled it up to sterilize it after it
had found its way into yet another pile of sheep s**t . . . . . . . . .

I'm taken by the simplicity of the Aquatube systems, particularly the use
of a very cheap and disposable drinks bottle rather than a bladder. They
also have always come with a simple mudflap designed to keep the bite valve
clean. They're mail order only

I should think they are pretty much interchangeable.
Either way, they do the valves separately in Cotswolds.

Old style bite valves have been appearing at a local
boot sale recently for silly money. We have got enough
bladders to last a week in the desert. :)

Up in the Lakes this week
The valves were in stock at George Fishers and at the Climbers shop in
Ambleside. Cost is £3.99 for a valve.

I actually took up Carol's recommendation and used the Needle Sports
on-line store at www.needlesports.co.uk.

The bite valves they sell are the new yellow/green high flow type and
also cost £3.99, and there is no delivery charge. Though they state
orders may take 3-5 (or even up to 10) days, I received my bite valve
the next day, about 18 hours after ordering it!

Needless to say, I immediately complimented them on the their service.
