Anyone been to St Kilda? I'm hoping to go there for a day trip from Harris at end of July. There's 4.5 hours ashore, so I was wanting to climb Conachair from the Gap. Then continue to Mullach Mor, then follow track to Mullach Sgar. If time allows, I would then go to Mullach Bi, before returning to the village. Has anyone done this? Does anyone know how bad the bonxie (great skua) attacks are likely to be at this time of year?

We went from Uig, in Skye, at the beginning of May and had about four
hours ashore. We didn't quite follow your proposed route, but several of
the other passengers did, although I'm not sure about Mullach Bi. We
contented ourselves with walking up the road, then left at the junction
and as far as the radar station on Mullach Sgar.

The island is a fascinating place and well worth the trip, although we
did think Boreray was very impressive too (and the Stacs).

Thanks for the info Syke, and there's some great images on your link. I reckon the route is definitely doable, just hope there's not too many skua attacks. Was there many skuas around when you were there? They always go for the highest point ie: your head, so I'll have to leave a walking pole or something sticking out of the top of my rucksack to keep them occupied.

Sorry! I forgot that part of your question! No, we only saw a few in
the distance. I suppose we weren't near their nest sites. The
walking-pole advice is exactly what the NTS warden told us. He also
advised that when you were on the cliffs, never to stand closer to the
edge than six feet, then if you stumble you'll only hurt your nose!
This, of course, doesn't allow for wind!

There were some Fulmars (I think) nesting in the quarry about half-way
up (or down) the road

Anyway, enjoy your visit, we did.

Regards
