Has anyone been on the ground in Lakeland the last couple of days? We've
been planning a week's walking, camping out based near Seathwaite... The
intention is to travel up tomorrow, but I'm wondering if we should cancel.
Are we likely to be seriously inconvenienced by the floods (local shops
closed etc)? What roads are closed? Is the Honister Pass open?
Very grateful for any first-hand reports - as usual I'm reluctant to
believe all the hyped-up disaster stories in the media!
Cheers
PB
Hopefully things will be better tomorrow.
Booths supermarket is closed and will be so for a few days due to
flooding, Coop, Spar and Open all Hours open.
Borrowdale was still closed off today.
Everything will be very very sodden, so camping is probably not a good
idea, some walking routes will be affected but the higher ground does
drain quite quickly.
I would ring any specific campsites, B&B etc for up to date info.

Might very well depend where you are (although Seathwaite doesn't
sound promising). I've family living in Greystoke who say that the
beck there hasn't flooded as badly as it's done a few times in the
past; sounded no worse than it was a few weeks ago. On the other hand
there's all that's been on the news, so as I said, it might be a roll
of the dice to know what's bad where.

Quite a few road closures at the moment:

Cockermouth flooding seems to be going down but I would get an Idea of
bridges that have been affected aparently there is an 18 mile drive to
get to a spot across Workington.
Having seen what a flash flood does to Borrowdale a few years ago, I'd stay
well out of the areas that's flooded. If a Land-Rover has difficulty you've
no hope ;-)
Seathwaite will be sodden for weeks IMHO.

Sky News have some photos on their website none of borrowdale but
there is extensive flooding elsewhere I'd stay clear for a couple of
weeks at least.

Looks like the road coming out of Rosthwaite and the Royal Oak said
it's the worst flood since the 60's
The road to Borrowdale was open this morning ( Saturday) but it has
started to rain again and water levels in Borrowdale are rising !
Keswick is in 2 parts at present as the main bridge over the Greta (
A5271) towards High Hill,Crosthwaite and Portinscale is closed to ALL
users including pedestrians.
The Station Street Bridge to Fitz Park (which is flooded) is also closed
to ALL users.
So walking between the 2 parts is a problem and driving involves going
via the A66.
All businesses seemed open today and Booths has reopened with a limited
selection of groceries.
The A66 westward was closed and is supposed to open later today !

I looked at:
http://www.cumbria.gov.uk/roads-transport/highways-pavements/roads/road-works/roadworksmap.asp
Which overlays Road works on OS maps - (seems to get locked in Pan mode
on Firefox)
This zooms from approx 1:250k down through 1:25000 through street plans
1:1000 ?? showing individual properties.
