Just noticed this mapping software - looks quite intersting to be able
to carry around maps with contours, etc in a GPS.

Does anyone know how much coverage you can actually carry around with
you - ie how memory hungry are these maps? Can't seem to find a
reference to this on the web just yet!

I use some really old version of mapsource and the free contours from
the link below on my 8Mb Garmin Legend and can get contours on my unit
for all of Cumbria plus most of Yorkshire and road maps for the whole
north west of England, all London and the area between Ipswich and
Cambridge

Well, it is a bit new.

Don't know is the answer to your question. However, if considering a
purchase, I would suggest you spend some time trying the Garmin demo stuff
out on a PC to determine if it does all you require (there is a demo
function on their website).

When I looked at the software for an areas around my home, the path/track
data was all over the place; paths and tracks missing (including concrete
surfaced roads of bridleway status, others of footpath status, and others
with no legal ROW), and other paths and tracks marked which are not ROW,
including some with large "keep out access to land fill site only" signs!
There is confusion between mud farm tracks and surfaced public roads in the
size of markings (the mud track having a heavier marking than the road).
The contour data looked accurate (as far as I could assess).

So, with that ringing set of problems in the path, tracks and ROW markings,
I'm sticking with the free contour data from the SMC website.

The Garmin topo maps are a lot more detailed though, and have rivers,
and roads in addition to contours (and sundry POIs and all sorts). I'd
expect you'd get a =lot= less area on using the Garmin version.

I suppose I'd better save up my pennies and buy it and see ... or maybe
save a lot more pennies and get it with the new 60Cx handset which will
take a huge memory card (up to 512 MB I believe) which ought make
getting a large area in pretty easy (and somewhat slow!).
