Will be visiting Callander in a few weeks time and looking for some help
on a walking route from Brig o Turk and along the south shore of Loch
Venachar to Callander.
Looking at the map there is parking on the south side of the A821 at the
Brig o Turk, I was wondering if there was public access to cross the
river south of here then past Achray Farm and on south to pick up the
cycle route on the south side of Loch Venachar then east to Callander.
Would be grateful for any help,

Yes. Car park is for nice wee pub and the route you describe is public
access. I have often cycled the opposite way from Wheels in Callander to
the pub, stopped for a refreshment and then back to Callander. Makes a
nice summer evening jaunt - if you don't mind midges!

Thanks for confirming the Loch Venachar route for me George.

I wonder if I could pick your brain a bit further.
I will be travelling with a group of walkers with mixed physical ability
and therefore I need a good mix of walks to make sure I can get all out
on a least some of the walks, I have a couple of mountain walks for the
fit thy are no problem and Brig o’ Turk and Loch Venachar you have
helped with will be suitable for all on this trip. I was looking for
another similar walk of about 7 or 8 mile maybe on the cycle route
heading north from Callander to Strathyre or even from Strathyre or even
further north, we have transport at each end of any linear walks so
there is no problem there. If you could give me the heads up on a
particularly good section of this cycle route and suggested any good
parking that would be a great help.

I was also looking at a walk to give others in the group a bit of height
and different terrain I was thinking of something like, south east out
of Callander to Achenlaich then onto Bridge of Brackland then up the
track through the forest to Coire Eas na Callich, then back down the
road and over Callander Craig and into Callander, any thoughts on that
one would be of great interest.

Thanks again,
MP

Not too familiar with walking in Callander area. Just the Vennachar and
Strathyre cycle routes. The latter is an easy walk out of the town car park
on disused railway track so is practically flat. There are forest trails
linked to the Vennachar route which are quite steep on places.

If you can arrange the transport, the section of the cycle route NCR 7
from the top of Glen Ogle down to Lochearnhead is quite spectacular. Of
course, it's tarmac and that may not be what you want. It is, however,
an easy short walk and may suit some.

The usual access to this area from Callander is the 'C' road at 633077 on which there are two car parks at the start of trails (marked on Landranger 57). A path from the upper CP goes to Bracklin Falls. Over the bridge a path can be followed alongside the Keltie Water for a few hundred meters until it climbs to join the forest road north-west then north. Out of the plantation, the forest road then descends to another bridge (great views to Ben Vorlich etc) and the C road. Around one Km down the road a path (sign) goes up to Callander Crags. There is a wooden bridge a short way down the other side of CCs, and immediately after it a path (very steep at first) leads down to the lower CP. Alternatively, the main path descends to Callander from where a forest path goes to the lower CP or minor roads or the main road lead back to the C road.

One of my favourite running circuits in the area - varied terrain, good views and some modest ascents. I'm off there now as it happens.

For walkers, I guess it's only a short half day - going via Auchenlaich would be slightly longer but I have never done that and I don't know the about access.

Thanks for this John
I had looked at trying to do a two car walk from the car park at the
top of Glen Ogle down to Lochearnhead but it was a bit short, I was
looking to make the walk about 8mile. I had looked at the trying to
extending the walk by using the dismantled railway from Lochearnhead
along the northern shore of Loch Earn to one of the car parks on the
shore near Derry Wood but have no idea if the dismantled railway is open
to the public and if the car parks are accessible from the dismantled
railway?
Alternately I thought about just trying to keep heading south on the
cycle track and try and find some parking off the A84 but couldn’t
really see any looking spots on the map.

Once again I would be very grateful for any advice.

I don't know about the disused rail route you mention. I rather doubt
that it's navigable, but I couldn't say for sure...

Other options? You could start in Killin instead and follow the Rob Roy
Way/NCR 7 to Lochearnhead. Or extend that to the Kingshouse Hotel, where
the RRW and NCR 7 diverge. There's plenty of parking available here. Or
use the section of the RRW from Kingshouse to Strathyre...

A book I'm sure you'd find useful is "The Glens of Trossach" by Peter D
Koch-Osborne. Published by Cicerone Press. I've seen these reduced in my
local branch of "The Works". Very readable and informative, and strongly
reminiscent of the Wainwright guides in style.

The car park at the top of Glen Ogle down to Kingshouse Hotel looks easy
enough for all abilities in our party so that’s one to look at John,
don’t think I’ll push them on to Strathyre that might be pushing it a
bit for some and the intention of this one was to keep it easy for those
least able.
Thanks again John,

Thanks for the heads up on the "The Glens of Trossach" book Syke.
I’ll check that out when I’m next out and about.

MP, no response to my post in the Brig o'Turk thread? I'm posting
on the infernal Google Groups, the current version of which seems
only
to allow a reply to the first message of a thread, so perhaps it was
not seen. Anyway, taking the option of reverting to the old G Groups
format, here's my post again.
