Hi,

Does anyone know anything about tunnels under Luton?
(A rumour is all I know!)

There were air raid shelters for 8,100 people in total. As far as I know the
entrances are bricked up but I've never looked for them. They are in Albert
Road, Midland Road and Beech Hill, all in Luton.

If you find anything please let us know.

There's at least one file in the Public Records Office that would be
worth looking at:

HO 207/1152 REGIONS OUTSIDE LONDON (REGIONAL OFFICE 1943
FILES): Region No 4 (Eastern): Luton
Borough tunnel shelter: safety and
control of entrance

There used to be some air raid shelters on the slopes adjacent to Spittlesea
road before they built the airport spur road and additional car parking. I
once went to them when I was a kid, I don't know if they still exist try
asking the airport customer services if they encountered anything while
building.

was pointed out to me by a railwayman. As you cross from the station to the
top part of the town by the foot bridge look down to your left and at
trackside ther is a bricked up portal. This old bloke worker said that was
an entrance. It is amazing what you discuss when youve got off abus from
Scotland at 04:15.

There are a series of tunnels under Britannia House in Leagrave Rd that
was once air raid shelters for the staff of SKF. I was taken down there
around 5 years ago when I was working in the Building. There is also a
lookout post on the roof. Also opposite the town hall in Upper George
St you can access via one of the buildings basements an abandoned series
of large rooms that extend quite away under the road. The rooms don't
look like they have been used for many years and are in total darkness.
Again I was in there around 5 years ago.

Hi
Those tunnels are long gone when the road up to Capability Green was built. I used to play in those shelters too, there were 3 tunnel complex's in all. Hope this helps.
