I've heard that there was a "nuclear bunker" somewhere in the new
forest where emergency service vehicles (i.e. the firebrigade and
ambulance) would have gone during a nuclear war. I'm not sure if its
part of a bigger network but wondered if anybody had heard anything
similar?

Thanks

The message <7ha8skF...@mid.individual.net>
from "Steve Walker" <spam...@beeb.net> contains these words:

A friend used to go out in the police convoys on exercises, they would
park up in a field by a good pub and spend most of the time in there. I
suspect they might do the same if sent out for real.

Maybe referred to two adjacent sites in Somerford, Christchurch, both
still extant.

The "bunker" - maybe ROC post, i don't know - is now somerford youth
club. This is listed on subbrit.

Over the road is a corrugated shed which I believe was the civil defence
ambulance depot. It is still in good condition but no sign of what the
current use is, if any.

Adjacent to the youth club is a current ambulance depot, not sure if
this is related to the older civil defence depot or not.

That is quite interesting! That is very probably it - a civil defence
shelter rather than a bunker. We knew someone who drove ambulances and
I think he mentioned it, but someone else had said something about the
new forest. I found this page

http://209.85.229.132/search?q=cache:R_90pNL3LHEJ:freespace.virgin.net/anne.welch/newpage12.htm+ww2+emergency+vehicle+shelter&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&client=firefox-a

Its cached within Google but I wonder if it may have been an old WW2
shelter possibly.

look in two places, enter the Brandon forest on the access road on the right just as you enter Brandon , across from the petrol station, go I about 1/4, to 1/2 mi used to be a small bunker entrence sticking up from the ground, leads to larger one. the other one is on the lakenheath villiage to methwold road at a road junction, surrounded by large fence , on right side of road, has or had MOD signs
