Have read accounts of underground facilities beneath GCHQ's two
locations in Cheltenham. Is there anything in these stories ?
I would have thought that logicly there would be substantial facilities
to house the acres of computers they must have there. At Fort Meade,
the NSA has vast underground facilities to house their computers, I
would have thought we have a similar arrangement ? I'd heard the Oakley
site backs into a ridge, and that there may be something under there.
Any one heard/seen anything ?

Also, had heard BT's National Network Central Operations Unit at
Oswestry in Shropshire, which has widespread telephone monitoring
operations using System X and Tinkerbell, is also located below ground ?

Regards.

Dan.

It's a surface building IIRC.

Perhaps you'd like to tell us all what you think "System X" is .....

The system used at the telephone exchange IIRC.

I've lived in Cheltenham all my life and have heard every story under
the sun about what is below the 2 GCHQ sites!!. For instance: The Benhall
site goes underground by 8 floors and has tunnels radiating out in all
directions. The Oakley site has a secret access tunnel on top of Cleeve
hill (directly above the site) and people have seen Army 4 tonne trucks
driving into it!!. My own opinion is that Oakley has at least 1 sub level,
friend of mine worked on fitting the new air con in the last phase of
building there and was not allowed to go into the lowest floor of the new
building, which was below the basement level.
The new building at Benhall does go underground, but don't get too
excited, all that is there will be an internal roadway for the post
Department!!. As for the old building at Benhall being Sub level, aho
knows!!!!

Where did you read about these underground facilities Dan??

Dom,

I read an article by Robin Cole that said that both sites are as
big below ground as on the surface, that they could drive trucks in,
could operate in isolation in war, had protected sites for the
computers, etc, etc....pretty basic stuff really ! Nothing really
substantial to get your teeth into !

Er... Why ask, if you already knew what it is?

A " monitoring device used by GCHQ " ? Hmmm, if you read my
post I don't actually see WHERE I said that, I was asking about it's
possible underground status, to which several people kindly replied.
Alright......?

It used to be sound advice to new MPs never to ask a parliamentary
question unless you already knew the answer.

Like I said, I wondered what the person who seemed to think it was
some sort of GCHQ monitoring equipment thought it was.

It wouldn't be the first time that some over enthusiastic paranoid
conspiracy theorist has assumed that because it's called "System X" it
must be something secret.

However, the truth of the story is that when BT were evaluating two
different makes of telephone exchange back in the late 70's, they
called one (made by GPT) System X, and the other, (made by Ericsson
and a variant of the AXE-10) System Y purely so that they could
discuss them without people outside the project knowing which one was
made by who.

As the GPT exchange didn't have a designated name before then, the
name stuck, and the GPT exchange line has been called System X ever
since.

Ericsson AXE-10 exchanges are also still referred to occasionally as
System Y in the UK.

You referred to "widespread telephone monitoring using system X and
tinkerbell"

I just wondered what you thought system X is.

The BT centre in Oswestry has closed the underground bit as part of it
collapsed and mud and rubbish got in, they removed most of the MOD kit about
a year ago.
