Also, had heard BT's National Network Central Operations Unit at
Oswestry in Shropshire, which has widespread telephone monitoring
operations using System X and Tinkerbell, is also located below ground ?
Regards.
Dan.

I read an article by Robin Cole that said that both sites are as
big below ground as on the surface, that they could drive trucks in,
could operate in isolation in war, had protected sites for the
computers, etc, etc....pretty basic stuff really ! Nothing really
substantial to get your teeth into !

I know what system X is, I was asking the person who seemed to think
it was a monitoring device used by GCHQ.
Route the calls!!
Er... Why ask, if you already knew what it is?
It used to be sound advice to new MPs never to ask a parliamentary
question unless you already knew the answer.

Running Voyager 2.07 and RISCOS 4.02 on an Acorn StrongARM RiscPC
Like I said, I wondered what the person who seemed to think it was
some sort of GCHQ monitoring equipment thought it was.
It wouldn't be the first time that some over enthusiastic paranoid
conspiracy theorist has assumed that because it's called "System X" it
must be something secret.
However, the truth of the story is that when BT were evaluating two
different makes of telephone exchange back in the late 70's, they
called one (made by GPT) System X, and the other, (made by Ericsson
and a variant of the AXE-10) System Y purely so that they could
discuss them without people outside the project knowing which one was
made by who.
As the GPT exchange didn't have a designated name before then, the
name stuck, and the GPT exchange line has been called System X ever
since.
Ericsson AXE-10 exchanges are also still referred to occasionally as
System Y in the UK.

You referred to "widespread telephone monitoring using system X and
tinkerbell"
I just wondered what you thought system X is.
