It is with great regret that I pass on the news that Lukas Knutsson
has been killed whilst undertaking a wingsuit BASE jump in
Switzerland:

http://www.blincmagazine.com/forum/board/23.html

I mention it here because I have a feeling that Lukas spent some time
in the UK and there may be some people out there who knew him? I
remember seeing his name and picture in some old editions of the
magazine I have. In a quick scan, I found a picture of him modelling
the new Tear-Drop in Dave Morris' kit new section of the August 1987
edition of the magazine. I'm sure I've seen his name attribute to an
article or letter and I'll continue to search.

Lukas always impressed me in his achievements and his thoughts online.
He also produced impressive videos. Check out Take It To The Streets
and Gryttjom Will Rock You

I was looking forward to meeting Lukas one day, so I could ask him
what his connection with the UK was. I guess I won't get the chance
now.

My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

There's another picture of a very young looking Lucas in the Brits
Aborad article about the Spanish Xmas boogie on page 30 of the
February 1987 magazine

That's really sad I remember doing my early freefall jumps with him at
Sibson in the '80s.

My sincerest condolences to his family and friends.

What a bummer. I was in Romasdal with Lukas this summer when I did my
first wingsuit jump with him. I was so scared but he gave me a good
pep talk and I did a top first jump. I saw him do 44 seconds from
4500ft and travel 3km to the far side of the valley - awesome. He will
be sadly missed.

Mort,

Can you shed anymore light on this? Anyone know when Lukas came to the UK,
why, and how long he stayed for?

Don't be too sad, he was doing what he loved.

Would have been around 1985-86 as far as I can remember. I think he was
working in London at the time but I can't remember exactly at what. I
imagine there will be others 'lurking' on here who will remember him from
those days too.

Lukas was a regular at Cranfield when I was the DZ manager there in
1986. I have a photo in front of me now of him at New River Gorge from
that era with Nigel Slee, Chris Gilmore, Chris Ivin and Alan
Hetherington.

His demise saddens me. I haven't seen him in a bunch of years but I'll
always remember him as a nice guy.

Found the letter that Lukas wrote to the magazine and it appears in
the April 1984 edition on page 11. In it, he elaborates that he
started skydiving in the previous October, that he's a Cat 6 jumper,
and his friends think he has a two-track mind, but he only mentions
skydiving! He laments about the seemingly permanent English cloud base
at 100 feet. The rest of the letter is influenced by a forthcoming
equipment purchase and discusses the merits of square reserves and
AODs! He rounds up the letter by thanking John, Ronnie, Dave Morris,
Alan Bonnet, Derk Boersma, Dave Ward, Ray the Barman, Joyce the cook
and Paul the pilot. He signs it with the nickname "Torchy".

Lukas was a real nice 'kid' when I first met him in the UK in the mid
eighties and a pretty damn good skydiver. He went on to make a good name for
himself there but in the late eighties at around the same time as I (just a
little earlier) and a whole bunch of others did, he decided to cross the
pond and go big in the US. When I arrived to stay in Z-Hills Lukas was
already pretty well established as a rising star along with a couple of
other 'hot kids' such as Andy Duff & Jack Jeffries. After a while he
returned to Europe and I never heard much of him after that, the last
contact I had with him he told me he was in a good job, married and had a
family, was still skydiving but generally staying close to home. Good for
him!

I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. Tracey and I offer our sincere

condolences to his family and friends.

God Speed Lukas.

Lukas was also one of the first World Champions of Freestyle - winning
that title in 1991 with his Swiss cameraman Andi Duft. This was long
before freefly was invented, and one of the few years that Olav Zipser
got beat at his own game.

Lukas started jumping here at Sibson in the mid 80's with the
Cambridge University Skydiving club. He was at Sibson for several
years before going over to the USA. He was a member of the AirTime
4-way team in the 1990 Nationals with Graham Godding, Ben Raynor &
Chris Lynch. Sue & I adopted the team & fed them (they were so
sweet!). I remember a sunny, happy, fun person. So sad we won't bump
into him again in this lifetime.

Blue skies forever Lukas & deepest condolences to wife & family. What
a sad loss for them.
