The video is available in a low/small and a high/large quality/size format,
which require Microsoft Windows Media Player 9, from:
ftp://ftp.skydivingmovies.com/public/Students/BluePeterSimonThomasAFF128k.wm
v (7.2 MB)
ftp://ftp.skydivingmovies.com/public/Students/BluePeterSimonThomasAFF384k.wm
v (24.1 MB)
The video runs to just under 10 minutes in length. I think it's pretty cool.
It's excellent exposure for the sport and the Falcons. It's just a shame
they had to go to California to do it. I also think it's an excellent
portrayl of the student experience; Simon's fear in the plane is palpable
but his confidence in his training allows him to control it and perform
well. The brief use of his onboard camera and microphone add to the
sensations. His training shines through when his radio fails and executes an
excellent pattern and landing (as all students should be able to do!). The
funniest bit is the pull, where dispite having kept hold of the handle on
the ground (although maybe not the first time), it goes flying in the air.
From his on-board microphone you can hear, "Woo-hoo! Whoa! My legs!(?) Check
canopy, one thousand. It's deployed"
There was a live web chat with Simon after the show aired and the BBC were
supposed to be making the transcript available at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter/chat/index.shtml but unfortunately after
a week, it's still not there. I'll keep an eye on it and let you know if it
appears.
Nice one! Even though some of the camera-work is a bit shoddy :-P

Seeing skydiving on Blue Peter inspired me to want to jump myself.

Typical, not long after the initial post, it's now gone up.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/bluepeter/chat/simon_livechat.shtml
It's more of a general chat rather than being specifically about the
skydiving but there were a couple of questions:
Simon Lover - What is it like skydiving?
Skydiving was scary! It's something I have always wanted to do, but until I
did it I had no real expectation and I found it a lot harder then I thought
I would. But once the canopy opened I loved it! It goes from being fast and
noisy to all of a sudden when the canopy opens it becomes very peaceful and
you're on your own. I will keep on doing it!
Nathanael - What did your face feel like when you jumped?
You can't really feel what is going on because there is so much happening,
and you're falling at 120k per hour, you can't really appreciate what is
going on, so I didn't even know what my face was doing at that time, I
couldn't feel it, but it's an awesome face massage if your after one!
Philip - Are there any events you would still like to cover as a presenter
for Blue Peter?
I still want to be in this freefall parachute display. I've got a lot of
work to do before I can do that.
Lotte - What has been your hardest challenge so far?
My hardest challenge was definitely free-fall parachuting! I don't have a
fear of heights at all, so I thought it would be a breeze. However it was
much much harder then I expected and I haven't completed the course yet, so
I haven't fully conquered it. That's still to come. As I've already jumped,
I now know what awaits me, which makes it even scarier. It's possibly true
that ignorance is bliss.
Wash your mind out with soap and water young man.

The Presenter is a really great guy, he was unfortunate enough not to complete
the course as stated above but, this was not due to being shit scared or
anything like that, it was merely too much work to fit in in such a short time
span, with the filming of ground training over and over again and so on...
I say this as i was on the trip and saw all that went on back stage...
So please when the full programme airs next month, please respect the guy for
doing it in the first place and watch this space as he will be back to finish
it....
Regards to you all for respecting a student learning to skydive...

I remember Noakesie doing that and it too inspired me to do this later.
Not sure he did it from 25k, but willing to be corrected?
