Collect old masters, they are more sought after than old mistresses.
Thanks for the research.
Last lot of leather I bought (for a kilt belt) practically broke the
bank - true, it was suitable for a howdah's girthstrap, but it cost
fifty quid.
The brass buckle, slider and finial BTW, were from a baldric, worn on
only one occasion: when the Bredalbane Regiment (Fencibles) was
inspected (with other fencible regiments) by Queen Victoria, some time
ago...
I shall have to lash out on the leather I suppose as the Rainham Ranges
are no longer in use. (In the mid 1950s we were questioned by redcaps
about whether any of us might just have been shooting at the numbers
over the butts - it seems that a cow in Kent was shot with a ·303.
Fortunately, scores were being kept, and all our details managed to get
all their shots on the targets, and recorded, so it weren't us, Sarge.)

Further 'research' brings-up:

Horrible looking thing, and is the very sling which is no my rifle, so
I'd better keep it, and look for a length of black leather for range use...

The sling from a Schmidt-Rubin might well suffice, similar sort of
design but with a spring clip for the lower swivel. I saw a bin full of
them at one of the Bisley fairs.
Thanks - must get the motorcycle on the road! Relying on public
transport as I do means that I have to be back in Norwich by five-thirty
if I don't want a fifteen mile walk - or an unaffordable taxi.
